Guess what happened in August (this very month) 61 years ago? The Beatles released their album and second movie, (the one in color) “Help,” which was a great ‘spy spoof’ movie and a great album. But although I like the Ken Thorne instrumentals on the back side, the English version was better since it introduced a slightly newer sound of the Beatles, with songs like, ‘Yesterday,’ ‘I’ve Just Seen a Face’ and ‘It’s Only Love,’ steer the Fab four away from simple pop songs to more deep love songs as well as ‘think’ piece type songs that the band would continue on “Rubber Soul,” the album that came about five months later.

One of my favorite pictures from Orson Welles’ early career is this picture taken while shooting “Citizen Kane” (and, if I remember correctly, the same shadowy backdrop was used at the end of “The Magnificent Ambersons”). His face against the shadows seems just too cool to me!

I’m still writing about August and the Beatles this week, and in August of 1968, The Beatles announced the formation of Apple Records. The first four releases were (besides the Beatles, ‘Hey Jude,’ which had a Capital Records serial number, but still put out on Apple) The Black D**e Mills Band, (Apple Single 1800) with a cover of ‘Yellow Submarine’ and the B-side being ‘Thingamabob,’ which in Cleveland, Ohio, the Big Chuck and Hoolihan show used that B-side for the musical backdrop for their ‘New Talent Time’ sketches.
The others (or as the Beatles called it, “Our first four!”) were Apple single 1801,Mary Hopkins’ “Those Were the Days,” produced by Paul McCartney, Apple single 1802, “Sour Milk Sea,” by Jackie Lomax, produced and written by George Harrison, featuring George, Paul, Ringo, Eric Clapton, Jackie and members of Badfinger on the song.
Apple single 1803 was The Iveys’ (soon to re-name themselves, Badfinger) “Maybe Tomorrow,” produced by early David Bowie producer, Tony Visconti.

Yes, it’s August and I thought I’d bring up some Beatle items, such as on August 8th, 1969, The Beatles took ten minutes (with the police blocking traffic) to shoot the cover of ‘The Abbey Road’ album cover, featuring the band crossing the street on the famous ‘zebra-crossing’ cross walk. Strangely, the album had no markings on the front of it, only the four members of the band, (as if by that time, no one on earth, did NOT know who they were) leaving the album title and credits for the back of the album!

I was recently both honored and excited as the Two Morrows Publishing Company asked me to write an article for their September, 2026, ( #45) issue of “Comic Book Creator.” The magazine is devoted to comic book artist/creator, Gene Colan, who would have been 100 years old on September 1st.
I was asked to write about Gene’s ongoing friendship with me over the years as we took turns calling one another on the phone.
The magazine is being released this upcoming Wednesday (comic book day…August, 12th) in all of your comic shops around the country. I’m not sure if the big book stores (Barnes and Noble for example) will be carrying them, but ask your book store or comic book dealer for it. I’ve already received my advance copy and Gene takes up the whole back half of the magazine and I think it’s a great one for fans of Gene’s art.
In a comic panel talk session that I was on with one-time Marvel head, Jim Shooter a few years back, he announced that Gene was probably in the top 5 comic artists of all time, drawing Daredevil, Tomb of Dracula, Captain America and Batman as well as drawing and co-creating, Guardians of the Galaxy!
Look for it, you won’t be disappointed!

This week I am starting to shop for a birthday present for my buddy, Tim. Like myself, he collects comics, so…he gave me a 3-page list of comics to choose from for a gift. As you can see if you look closely, I have already circled a few books as I scratch them off of his list. But how many comics are enough for a gift for a massive comic collector!

I just picked up the last issue (the finale, #31) of Howard the Duck, which featured Howard adopting the alter-ego of ‘Iron Duck,’ which was Howard in a same-colored garbage can as the colors of Iron Man’s armor. The oddity here is that Gene Colan drew both Iron Man for awhile and Howard for most of the series. I think it was a good send-off for the comic!

Yep, NFL training camps are opening up now and it made me think of my younger days in a certain snow game that I evaded the rusher and threw a touchdown pass!
