Papyrus or parchment? The two materials behind Scripture's earliest copies. πŸ“œ

For the Old Testament, parchment β€” made from animal skin β€” was the dominant writing material. The Dead Sea Scrolls, our earliest surviving Hebrew manuscripts, are mostly written on parchment and leather.
For the New Testament, papyrus took over. Made from the papyrus plant, it was affordable and widely available across the Roman world β€” which is why the earliest NT fragments, like 𝒫52 (the oldest known piece of the New Testament), are papyrus.

Parchment eventually became the standard for both by the 4th century, giving us the great codices like Sinaiticus and Vaticanus.

It's a small piece of papyrus from the Gospel of John, dated to the early 2nd century CE. Just a few verses survive, but its early date makes it some of the most important physical evidence we have for how soon the New Testament was being written and copied.

This is the oldest Christian song we can actually hear. Not just the words, the melody too.

It’s called the Oxyrhynchus Hymn, written on papyrus around 250 AD and discovered in Egypt. What makes it unique is the musical notation written above the Greek words. Earlier Christian hymns exist, even in the New Testament, but this is the only one from the first 400 years where we know both what they sang and how it sounded.

And here’s what matters: the song is a hymn to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. That means ordinary Christians were singing the Trinity around 250 AD, decades before the Council of Nicaea formalized the doctrine in 325. They weren’t told to believe it. They were already worshiping it.
