This beautiful Orthospirifer brachiopod was found along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Southeast Wisconsin. Although they resemble clams, brachiopods are a completely different group of marine animals that lived on the seafloor over 400 million years ago during the Devonian Period.

These ancient fossils are reminders that Wisconsin was once covered by a warm, shallow sea filled with life. It's amazing to think that a walk along the beach can uncover a piece of Earth's distant past!

I love finding these red/purple stones along the lake shore. The red part is jasper, and the purple part has sparkly specular hematite in it. These stones look really good after they're polished! This one is coming home. ✨️
