I plan to bring these walnut bowl blanks, pen and knife blanks to the meeting on Thursday for the raffle. Come to the meeting and buy some raffle tickets so you can get a piece. Mike Peace is scheduled to do the demo for us. You can find many videos of him on YouTube. He knows his stuff when it comes to woodturning. Visitors are welcome.

There are two thick pieces 5" and 7" plus three pieces at 1.2" for pen blanks and knife handles. The "feather" figuring in the crotch wood is worth the extra effort of the difficult set up for sawing.

Notice the crack? The bark inclusions are very deep, making the log weak and subject to spliting along the bark inclusions. I suspect such deep inclusions are what led to the rotten heart wood.

What do you do with very large hollow logs? They don't saw into lumber because of the hollow. What about sofa side tab...

What do you do with very large hollow logs? They don't saw into lumber because of the hollow. What about sofa side tables? So, I pulled a short 6' hollow log, cut slabs off the top and bottom, then cut into 3 sections for 3 side tables at 20" high x 20" x 24". I stood each up and sawed the ends off. Now for the hard part of chainsawing out the rotten hollows. I was able to clean out most of one table. I still have to pull the bark off, sand everything, and round the edges. Here's some photos of the progress thus far. The mill bed is a good height for the chainsaw carving work.
