The only thing scarier than 👻 or 🤡 this Halloween is the stuff we see when we clean draft beer lines and faucets.😳

Please remember, beer is a food product, so would you want to consume the following from dirty draft beer lines?:

🤢 BACTERIA
The bacteria in beer is not hazardous to human health; however, its effect is noticeable in beer's appearance, smell, and taste. The presence of bacteria results in an "off-taste" and a cloudy appearance that makes beer unappetizing.

🤢 YEAST
The presence of yeast in the beer lines results in surface film growth (biofilm).

🤢 MOLD (YES... MOLD)
Mold is introduced to beer through exposure to the atmosphere. The blackish film appears inside or outside faucets, couplers, FOBs, and beer lines.

The mold build-up results from an unclean environment. Unfortunately, this is all too common pre and post-pandemic. How many of you enjoy eating or drinking mold? *no one raises hand*

🤢 BEER STONE
Calcium is in the beer, introduced by the grains or the water used during brewing. The calcium then becomes a deposit on the interior beer line surface. Beer stone can continue to build up until it flakes off.

🤢 CLEANING CHEMICALS
Strong chemicals, known as "caustics" or "acids," are used to clean beer lines. Cleaning chemicals must contact the elements listed above, then dissolve and finally rinsed away with water during the proper cleaning process.

Properly cleaned beer lines will ensure the appearance, aroma, and flavor experience intended by the brewer is delivered pint after pint.

Give us a call to schedule your next maintenance before the busy upcoming holiday season! Cheers and Happy Halloween!🍻🎃

Here are the cleaning methods for remote aka "Long-Draw Systems:"

Pressurized Pot Cleaning:
Some cleaning cans/pots have the option to change caps to accommodate different types of keg couplers. Some more expensive stainless steel cleaning cans have the keg valves permanently installed. These cans work like a standard keg: the same gas pressure forces the cleaning solution through the beer lines.

🍺The chemical cleaning solution is correctly mixed in the container (water always goes first).
🍺Allow the cleaning solution to soak for a minimum of twenty (20) minutes.
🍺This method is the same as the direct draw system, but you're going to use more chemicals and water.
🍺Cleaning accessories are available to make the cleaning process more efficient for larger draft systems.

Mechanical (re-circulating cleaning):
Mechanical cleaning requires a motorized cleaning pump.

🍺Circulate the cleaning solution for a minimum of 15 minutes. Circulating the cleaning solution through the draft beer system is 80 times more effective than static (soaking)cleaning the lines.
🍺Mechanical cleaning is the preferred method for cleaning draft beer lines here at Draft Beer Intelligence.

There are 2 methods for cleaning Direct Draw Systems, aka "short-draw draft systems":

🍺Pump Type:

It's a plastic container with a hand pump on top. The beer faucet is removed. The cleaning solution is pumped through the line and soaks for a minimum of twenty (20) minutes.

This setup allows the cleaner to be connected to the shank. The chemical solution is pumped backward down the beer line.

Note: You must use a ball lifter in most couplers to prevent the check ball from stopping the flow.

🍺Pressure Pot Cleaning:

Some cleaning cans/pots have the option to change caps to accommodate different types of keg couplers. Some more expensive stainless steel cleaning cans have the keg valves permanently installed.

These cans work like a standard keg: the same gas pressure forces the cleaning solution through the beer lines.

The chemical cleaning solution is correctly mixed in the container (water always goes first). Allow the cleaning solution to soak for a minimum of twenty (20) minutes.

Unfortunately, bad beer systems still pour beer. If you want to pour the highest quality beer - it all begins with your draft system's design.

You can ruin a beer in the time it takes the beer to travel from the keg to the glass and all the details in between.

That's why our service begins with the design.

We work with architects and foodservice designers to give professional input and advice when laying out your beverage system, including what items to consider when locating equipment, its serviceability, and profitability.

More often than not, we meet operators and owners who are frustrated with their existing or brand new beverage systems.

The systems usually don't work as sold due to poor design and low keg yields. When contacted for system support, our competitors are seldom available.

At DBI, our support does not waver before or after the project's completion.

We pride ourselves on providing high-quality beverage systems by ensuring that our clients are set up to maintain their beverage system, deliver perfect pours and maximize their keg yields.

If you're experiencing issues such as cloudy beer, foamy beer, slow pour rate, or restricted beer flow, the issue could be with your beer faucet and you can troubleshoot the problem using a few simple steps...

But first, what is a draft beer faucet? The faucet is the dispensing point for the beer, and it is attached to the beer shank. A beer handle attaches to the faucet, which opens and closes the faucet to allow beer flow. A shank connects the faucet to the beer line and is attached to the wall or beer tower.

Draft Beer Faucet Troubleshooting Steps:
🍺Check that the faucet is tightened correctly onto the shank and there are no visible leaks.
🍺Make sure the keg coupler is properly connected to the beer keg.
🍺Inspect all parts of the draft system for any build-up of dirt or grime.
🍺Check all connections for leaks to ensure everything is functioning correctly.
🍺Ensure the gas portion of your draft beer system is on all gas tanks full. If you run a nitrogen generator, make sure its plugged in and operational.

Draft beer faucets are essential for ensuring that your beer tastes its best. Keeping them clean and properly maintained will help ensure you get the most out of your draft beer experience. Give us a call if you have questions or need any support. Happy pouring!🍻

🍻How to Clean a Keg Coupler🍻

Cleaning your keg coupler ensures that your beer stays fresh and delicious. Here are the steps we recommend at least every two to three weeks or every time you tap a new keg:

Step 1: Start by disconnecting the body from the keg and removing the handle.

Step 2: Then, use warm water and soap or sanitizer to clean all parts of the keg coupler. Make sure you get into all nooks and crannies!

Step 3: Once done, rinse with cold water and let the keg coupler air dry.

Step 4: Reconnect the body to the keg, and you're ready to pour!

🍻Keg Coupler Troubleshooting🍻

If your beer isn't pouring correctly, there may be something wrong with your keg coupler. Before doing any troubleshooting, make sure that all of the parts are securely connected and check that the seal is in place.

Also, make sure you are using the correct type of coupler. If you have to force the coupler to attach to the keg, it may not be the right type. Be sure to match your beer with our Keg Valve List.

If everything looks ok and you have the correct coupler, try adjusting the handle position to see if that helps. If not, it may be time to replace your keg coupler.

Contact us anytime if you need draft beer or beverage system design, installation, ongoing maintenance, or service nationwide. Together, let's keep "DOING BEER JUSTICE!" Happy Pouring!

Keg couplers are available in many different sizes and types to fit a variety of beer kegs. (And no, that is NOT a new type you've never seen before in the image - it is wild the things that we see in the field! 😂)

The most common keg couplers are the US Sankey (for American-style beers) and the European Sankey (for imported or craft beers). Other types include the AFROB, S System, Grundy, U System, G System, and more.

Each type fits different kinds of beer kegs. So make sure you get the right one for your draft system needs...Here is a breakdown of the types of keg couplers:

🍺D System: Also known as a Sankey keg coupler, this standard keg coupler will work most North American beers, including craft brews.

🍺U System: This is the style of coupler you'll need if you plan on tapping Guinness, Harp, Kilkenny, and other select beers from the UK.

🍺S System: Similar to the D System coupler, an S System coupler is also known as a European Sankey coupler. It works with popular European imports, including Heineken, Becks, and Amstel.

🍺A System: Designed for use with German beers, including Warsteiner, Paulaner, and Spaten, an A System coupler slides over the top of the keg stem. It is also referred to as a German Slider coupler.

🍺G System: For use with popular UK beer brands, such as Bass and Boddington's, the valve stems on a G System keg are shaped like a circle with three flat sides.

🍺M System: Similar to the A System coupler, an M System locks into place by sliding over the top of the keg. It is compatible with several German beers, including Schneider, Aventinus, Einbecker, and Veltins.

🍺KeyKeg: The KeyKeg or K System is a new setup for keg tapping that uses single-use plastic kegs. KeyKeg systems are gaining in popularity with select European breweries and US winemakers.
