RKS Craftworks FAQ
https://www.etsy.com/shop/rkscraftworks?section_id=11201270&ref=shopsection_leftnav_1
Q: Why should I buy a RKS Craftworks Pipe?
A: 1)Durability, my pipes can last several life times, more if you take care of them, no glass pipe or b**g can say that.
2)Smoothness, they smoke smoother than any glass pipe, glass b**g or glass chillum.
3) They are just beautiful, the pictures do not do them justice, but their beauty will instantly make you the envy of your friends.
4) Each one is hand made, hand carved and the designs are hand drawn with a wood burner. All pieces are numbered, signed and dated, no other pipe can offer this.
Q: Are RKS Craftworks Pipes environmentally friendly?
A: They are all made with reclaimed, recycled and/or scavenged oak. But most importantly NO TREES ARE HARMED for the purpose of making my pipes. No wood that I use comes from a store.
Q: Are RKS Craftworks pipes expensive?
A: That depends on your definition of of expensive. Sure you can but a glass pipe that is only $12 - $20 and it might last you six months to maybe two years (if you are lucky) or you can purchase any one of the pipes that I have available from $20 - $60 and it will last you long enough for you to pass on to your grand kid's grand kids, maybe even longer.
Q: What makes RKS Craftworks pipes so "pricey"?
A: 1) It takes roughly a week to a week and a half to make each pipe. First they are cut from raw pieces of oak (with the bark still on).
2)Then they are drilled with the bowl(chamber), draught hole and the bore holes lining up perfectly, this is a tricky process.
3)Next the pipe is carved and since I only use hard woods, it is a little bit of a time consuming process.
4)After each pipe is carved, they are then polished to a glass like smoothness, this involves several different grades of sanding belts, (twelve in all). this process takes the better part of a week.
5)After that, each pipe enters the "pre-burning process". This involves pre-scoring the "bowl", this insures that the first hit will be smooth, because you are not smoking the wood the first time that you smoke out of it. This also involves adding the serial numbers, signature and dating to help ensure collectability.
6) Next comes the staining/coloring process.
7) Next is the part where is hand draw the designs with a wood burner. I use no stencils for this process, for more complicated designs I sketch it on the pipe first and sometimes even draw a rough draft first for the most complicated designs.
8) After that, I color or paint the designs inside of the wood burned drawings.
9) Finally, I add a protective finish to each pipe to ensure that the stain, colors and design will be as beautiful as long as possible. Long after the colors fade the design one the pipe and indeed the pipe it self will last forever.
Q: I really like your work with wood pipes, can you make glass pipes especially for me even though I see no other glass pipes in your inventory?
A: No, I have neither the tools, ovens or know how to make glass pipes, sorry. I only make wood pipes that will last you forever and hit so much smother than any glass pipe or b**g on the market.
Q: Can you make me a wooden b**g?
A: Are you serious? Would you really want a b**g made out of wood with water sitting in it? Slowly collecting mold? Slowly rotting? Seriously? Really? Because of the density of oak and my prescoring process, my pipes are much smoother than b**gs.
Q: Are RKS Craftworks pipes collectable?
A: While I can not guarantee that my pipes will go up in value, each pipe is one of a kind and guaranteed to last forever. Each is signed, dated and numbered. There are a small but growing collectors from across the United States and indeed the World that have chosen to buy two, four, five and even as many as nine pipes from me because they recognize beauty and craftsmanship when they see it.
