It is amazing how much damage can be done by putting nails and screws in loose furniture joints, especially chairs. The joints in chairs have a live load placed on them whenever someone sits in them. The joints are designed to move and carry the load. But when metal is placed in the joints to try to tighten them, the metal doesn’t move and the wood in the joints continue to wear and become looser. If modern pva glues, or epoxy is used, it makes repairs very difficult. The worst glue is Gorilla Glue, which is sometimes used in an attempt to fill the voids in loose joints, believing that the foam it produces will fill the gaps. That foam has no strength. It is better to repair the joint so that it is tight, and removing all old glue. Using hide glue allows the joints to be repaired in the future.
