1899- “The War With Spain” by Charles Morris

August 13th, 2023 marks the 125th anniversary of the ending of the Spanish-American War.

The Spanish-American War was a conflict that took place in 1898 between the United States and Spain. It was triggered by the sinking of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor and centered around the Spanish colonial possessions in the Caribbean and the Pacific. The war resulted in a decisive U.S. victory, leading to the end of Spanish colonial rule and the acquisition of territories such as Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines by the United States.

The war not only allowed America to emerge as a global power, but it allowed for the expansion of overseas territories, accelerated industrialization, shifted American foreign policy, and affected the conversation around imperialism.
