The secret behind the name “Beardtongue” is hiding inside the flower... 🌿

Foxglove Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis) has five stamens, but one is sterile and covered in tiny hairs, creating a beard-like appearance that inspired its common name. Combined with subtle purple nectar guides that help direct pollinators to nectar, this native wildflower is full of fascinating adaptations.

One year after planting our Monarch Pollinator Habitat Seed Mix for the Mid-Atlantic in our NRCS site, the field is putting on quite a show. The blooms are coming on strong, and we’re looking forward to seeing how the planting evolves through the rest of the summer and into fall while providing food and habitat for pollinators.

The final native plants from this year’s Habitat Kit Program have officially found their new homes. 🌱

This program helps people restore habitat by providing regionally appropriate native plants for pollinators and other wildlife. Each species is carefully selected to support biodiversity, strengthen local ecosystems, and reflect the deep ecological connections that make these landscapes thrive.

This year, kits were distributed to farmers, land stewards, schools, and communities committed to conservation. From providing season-long nectar and pollen resources to supporting the life cycles of native insects, every plant plays an important role in creating healthier, more resilient habitat.

These kits are more than plants. They are the foundation of long-term habitat restoration and a future where pollinators and people thrive together.
We’re grateful to be part of this effort and to everyone helping create habitat across the landscape, one planting at a time.
