Jean spent weeks molding a special heart-shaped box. He fired it until it was pure, hard, and luminous. He gave it to Adele in secret, asking her to paint their story upon it. Every evening by candlelight, Adele painted a tiny, exquisite scene. She drew a garden of overgrown roses, a hidden swing, and two figures sitting close together under the leaves. When the kiln baked the final glaze and the gold gilt was traced along the rim, the piece was complete. Jean placed a folded love note inside the porcelain heart.
