Molly the Manatee the Musical
A few years ago, we were in the middle of a GoFundMe campaign to launch our first book, “Molly the Manatee”. We used that money, figured a few things out, printed the books and began our little “publishing” company. Here we are 30 months removed from the time Molly showed up on our doorstep (literally) and Cool Water Ripple Books, LLC has grown. We have a total of 11 books printed and are soon to add two more. Including the two new books, we will have published five first-time authors. We have also given a venue to artist/illustrators and now there are 4 first time illustrators that have had their work published. In retrospect, it has been a truly quick rise to this point (it just seemed a LOT longer). Less than 19 months ago we still only had 1 book printed.
And now…
Yesterday. I witnessed something I could never have imagined while I “finished” Molly the Manatee on a flight returning from Ireland in 2014. Under the pen of playwright Polly Hilton and her musical partner Brian Dratch, they gave us an informal performance of “Molly the Manatee the Musical”.
It all began this way… Before “Molly the Manatee” was a book, Polly would frequent the shop where I collected pay and stated me in passing;
“Mr. Chic, I’ve always wanted to write a musical based on a children’s book…”
“Ok”.
Months later when the book finally came out, Polly came strolling in once again. I handed her the book.
She said; “Oh, this is your book!”
“Yes”.
She thumbed through it, pausing on various pages, admiring the incredible artwork illustrations of Liza Donovan.
She started to hand me the book back and genuinely said; “Congratulations!”
“No, that copy is yours.”
Confounded, Polly looked at the book and then at me…
“You’re supposed to go and make this a musical, remember?”
Her eyes brightened, her smile ever etched in my mind; she turned and went to energize the world.
Her path led her to graduate from Emerson College, to New York, to Orlando and the happiest place on earth, back to New York, (I imagine “Molly” tucked under her arm the whole time). She secured a job at the 92nd Y (check it out, it’s the gateway to Broadway), got engaged (congrats Polly and Brian), all the while working on the “Molly the Manatee the Musical”.
And yesterday, my parents, my son Colton, Polly’s parents, brother, and illustrator extraordinaire Liza witnessed the performance. It was performed in a room at “Imagine On”, an incredible off shoot of The Children’s Theatre of Charlotte. A place where Polly and her twin sister Claire performed, and I too performed some forty plus years ago (over on Morehead).
Polly and Brian played and sang… I heard it with my heart and it was perfect.
Merry Christmas, God Bless Us Everyone….
