9 years ago I helped Nick Offerman build a gift for one of his mentors, Shozo Sato. Prof. Sato was instrumental in the establishment of Japan House here in Urbana. Nick and his crew had already designed, manufactured, and dry fit the azumaya (gazebo) back at his shop in California. Rebecca Lee, Offerman Woodshop’s extremely accomplished and badass shop manager, also made the trip out to make sure this beautiful structure was built to spec.

I was lucky enough to be at the right place at the right time and I volunteered, along with a group of other wonderful souls, to help build this beautiful structure on the university campus near Japan House. I was able to meet someone whose work I admired, both in front of the camera and as a woodworker. After meeting Nick I admired him even more for his adherence to common courtesy and respect for those around him. Nick was kind enough to pose for pictures and spend his time meeting people, listening to their stories, and telling a few of his own and that is an experience I will always be grateful for.
