New 2018 Surface Element Coil Regulation

Over the last few years the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) worked closely with the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) regarding the fire safety of coil top ranges.

Earlier this year it was approved that ALL manufacturers were no longer going to be able to manufacture coil top ranges without a temperature limiting device on the surface elements.

What is a temperature limiting device?

Pictured below is a new temperature limiting element. What's visibly new is the sensing device that the blue arrow points to.

Why was this change made?

To address the fire hazards of the six and eight inch surface elements.

Can you just add the limiting device to an existing element?

No, the entire element has to be replaced.

How does this changed affect our customers?

All new electric coil top ranges sold (any manufacturer) will have to have temperature limiting capabilities on the surface element. This affects our customer by some range model numbers and range part numbers may change.

Once we sell the remaining older style elements and appliances we currently have in stock we will be no longer able to obtain any surface elements or appliances that does not have the temperature limiting capabilities.

Am i legally required to change all my element coils to the newer style on my existing units?

No, its not required that everyone must change the existing elements on all current units, but it is recommended by the (CPSC).
