Another long weekend at fish camp is in the books. The fishing was tough, but the boys kept grinding and we had a couple firsts. B1 caught his 1st wild brown. B3 caught his 1st on a fly he tied, which was the 1st on his new 4wt setup. He also caught his 1st brookie after learning the bow and arrow cast. B2 once again landed the biggest of the weekend with a nicely colored up 15" rainbow. I down sized tippet to 7x, threw on a size 18 elk hair caddis, and had my 1st few dry fly takes of the year as the day grew warm on Friday. As much as I've been enjoying nymphing the last few years, nothing beats trout sipping dries as the sun grows high in the sky or brookies blowing up Stimulators.

The big producers this past weekend were an Eggstacy Egg, Elk Hair Caddis, Zebra Midge, Hares Ear, and the brookies were all over Stimulators and Squiggly Worms. After a couple dozen nymphs to top off boxes, it'll be time to switch up and start tying dries, game changers, and other streamers. It won't be long now until the largemouths start moving into the shallow flats and the skagit setup comes out.

Nothing will challenge 40+ year old eyes quite like starting out with a size 20 tie before the 2nd cup of coffee

The little guy out fished everyone this past weekend by a lot. Friday morning was tough in the special regs area with the creek being high and tinted due to the over night rain. Around mid morning we ran into a guy who was doing well tight lining a small cheese Eggstacy egg. After swapping a few flies with the gentleman, I tied on the egg for B3 and he immediately landed 3. I've never fished an egg pattern outside of the Salmon River, but guess what I'll be tying this weekend! By mid afternoon the creek was pretty much back to normal conditions and size 18 black and red midge patterns landed a bunch. Saturday was crazy with mentored youth day. The boys chose fly rods over the spinning rods 😁 and it was 10am until we found an empty hole to throw flies. They did good and caught and released 4 on midge patterns out of a hole that probably seen a 1000 casts that morning. From noon until dark we headed back to the special regs section and caught many more on midges and, of course, orange collar PTs. I'll be tying up a few small boxes with the patterns that have done well over the last few weeks, along with repair a tip that lost a battle with a hemlock. Shoot me a message if you're interested in one of the boxes and good luck if you're going out for opening day!

1st trip of the year to a special regs stream was a success with a lot of fish and a lot of smiles. B1 caught his 1st golden, B2 caught the biggest at 17", and B3 was pretty much on his own for the 1st time and landed over 30 with just a little coaching along the way. Nothing beats watching the two oldest venture off on their own and figure things out to put a bunch in the net. The nymphs getting the most action were an extremely buggy hares ear, orange collar PT, olive caddis, and Roza's pink bead PT. Best part is I have less than 12 flies to tie to restock the boxes.
