I grew up on a dairy farm in rural Pennsylvania and love simple, country life. I have always been creative and as a child I learned to crochet from my grandmother for whom it was a lifelong passion. After our family moved back to central Pa and onto a historic little farm, Walnut Farm Designs was born. The Lord has blessed me with more than I could have imagined by giving me a little business out

of what I enjoy. We raise Blue Faced Leicester sheep and I look forward to being able to sell their excellent wool. These animals provide us with wonderful fiber and lots of entertainment. I love working with the colors of fibers and spinning yarn. There is always something new to try and enjoy creating here at Walnut Farm Designs! Sandy Hill Greenhouses in Georgetown, DE made me happy! I briefly thought about renting a U-Haul trailer to drive all the plants I wanted back home, but we didn’t have the hitch with us and our truck takes a special one. Also, my husband was not amused. So I limited myself. Look at the blooming water hyacinth! And these green petunias! I never saw wool needle point purses like this. Love floral wool needlepoint!

I couldn’t wait to ply! I think I’m going to have a lot of yardage spinning this Blue Faced Leicester wool so thin for the Bright Axis tee. I was afraid it will be too dense or bloom too much if I didn’t spin it this thin. I hope I’m right and it matches the light fi*****ng I bought for the top of the Bright Axis tee! I haven’t plied on a regular wheel for a while and didn’t pack my espinner. So I’m treadling super slow in the highest ratio whorl on my Joy wheel!

Thank goodness for vacations to get some spinning done! I’m spinning a light fi*****ng from my Blue Faced Leicester wool for the body of this Bright Axis pattern by Stephanie Lotven. I bought the yarn for the top from White Birch Fiber Arts at Md. Sheep and Wool. I wish I’d brought my e-spinner to ply but I didn’t think I’d get this much spinning time! This top will be nice colors for fall!

Gauge swatching for a Chicane Light sweater (by Jimenez Joseph) using Distelfink Fiber yarn. I forget the name of the color of this yarn, but it is a periwinkle that sometimes looks blue and sometimes lavender with a bronze stellina in it. Apparently I might now be a 2 sweater project person, because I wasn’t happy to be knitting a heavy sweater during the summer, and I’m still spinning a fall tee project, so I’m going to start Chicane Light which will be perfect for spring or fall.

I had a helper picking the red currants behind the Dyer’s Chamomile and the Weld. I told him to get one of his sister’s sun hats so his head wouldn’t get burnt and he came out with my gardening hat on. So I had to take pictures. 💕

I hadn’t realized that the sheep were so excited after their pasture change and missed getting it on video. Twice they ran down the slope to challenge Willow, our guardian at the gate and then they ran and pronked their way back up the hill. I love seeing animals pronk. We used to have alpacas that would pronk and sheep do it sometimes too. The sheep are also happy with the cool morning.

I always love watching my husband move the sheep. Sheep are highly food motivated, and he feeds them, so they are all in when he gets a scoop of grain to make sure they are motivated to move to a different pasture!

See that pollen pouch on the bee’s leg that is loving these weld blooms? I take between a half teaspoon and a teaspoon of fresh bee pollen every day. I think it gives me energy, and I’m a low energy person, so I need all I can get! It seems to help people and pets with allergies too. It contains B vitamins and minerals. Our pollen even has dye plant pollen in it, because the bees love the woad blossoms first thing in the spring and the weld in the summer and Japanese indigo in the fall, as well as all the other dye plants, flowers and vegetables I grow. Honeybees need a lot of flowers to harvest from!

My Genista Tinctoria, Dyer’s Greenweed, or Dyer’s Broom, has finally really taken off! I dyed two sample skeins with a handful of flowers. The greenish skein has been saddened with iron. I didn’t want to use too many flowers because I am hoping to finally have this seed to sell this winter!
