All summer you ran the yard on a peak July schedule. Full sessions, every zone tuned to keep things looking right while family was around.

Back-to-school arrives fast in the Sun Belt. Days are already shorter than they were three weeks ago. Morning temperatures are down a few degrees. Your lawn is not losing moisture at the same rate it was during July heat.

The schedule still running right now is doing more than your yard needs.

That was heat stress, not drought. St. Augustine and Bermuda go limp in August afternoon heat as a way to protect themselves from moisture loss. The roots are fine. The plant is doing exactly what it is supposed to do.

Running a zone at 2 PM loses most of the water to evaporation before it ever reaches the roots.

The real test is the next morning. Go out at 7 or 8 AM. If the grass bounced back overnight, that was heat stress. If it is still lying flat, your schedule probably needs one more session.

Your sprinkler head is running. Coverage has been getting worse every month.

After a full season of growth, turf rises up around the head housing. A nozzle sitting at blade level deflects the spray sideways instead of throwing it across the zone.

You keep adding runtime. More time sends water to the heads that already work. The buried one still cannot arc.

You have been cutting back the watering schedule all month. That spongy patch in the backyard is still there.

Overwatered soil stays compressed when you step on it. Spongy turf that springs back slightly means something has tunneled through the root zone underneath.

Mole crickets work just below the surface, loosening the connection between roots and soil. The grass stays green at first. The soil acts like something hollowed it out.

Adjusting your irrigation schedule does not fix tunneled soil. Neither does adding more water.

Your sprinkler head is running this morning. The dry strip it was supposed to cover is still getting drier.

A head sitting just a few degrees off-center throws the arc over the target instead of onto it. The zone sounds right. The bill looks normal. The dry strip keeps coming back no matter how much you adjust the controller.

The fix is not on the timer. It is in the yard, while the water is running.

Walk to the dry corner while that zone is active and look back toward the nearest head. You will see where the water is actually landing. Straightening the head takes under five minutes.
