DETROIT - At the restaurant, we ran into a problem that most business owners know too well: technicians and contractors. Or more specifically, the damage an incompetent and unaccountable one can do.

We hired a refrigeration technician who took our payment, “serviced” our equipment, and walked away. Within hours, temperatures climbed. Food had to be discarded out of caution, out of responsibility. What that meant in real terms was we bought and prepped an entire weekend’s worth of food twice. A financial hit we did not need and did not deserve. All while the whirlwind of social media fiends feasted off our soft opening blunders.

We reached out to the brother who came to fix them. Our text was read and ignored. Calls rang endlessly into nothing. Silence became the response. And silence, when you are trying to keep a restaurant alive, is the last thing you need.

So, I did what I’ve learned to do over the years. I turned to my social family. Not the haters and trolls, but those who know us, our brand, and our mission.

As usual, Detroit answered.

A brother who has followed my work for years reached out and said, simply, “I know a guy.” That guy was Matt Harrington of MH Mechanical, a professional HVAC and refrigeration technician with pipefitting and repair certifications, and more importantly, integrity. He drove over an hour, not once but over the span of two days, and methodically went through every piece of refrigeration we had.

He didn’t just fix problems. He anticipated them.

Our walk-in refrigerator. Our standalone freezer. Our three-door commercial refrigerator. All repaired. All stabilized. All troubleshot in ways that prevented future failure. The kind of work you feel immediately, not because something is flashy, but because everything is suddenly calm again. The hum is steady. The stress dissipates.

Then came the bill.

I braced myself. Miami has trained me to.

And it never came.

What did come was a price so reasonable I had to ask him why. His answer was disarming in its simplicity. He said people in his industry are known for overcharging, and he wants no parts of that. He does the work because he loves it. Because he believes in relationships. Because reputation still matters to him.

That is how larger conversations begin.

We talked about growth. About what it would look like to build something bigger than a one-man operation. About investment. About turning skill, discipline, and ethics into a solutions company that hires, trains, and expands. Because Detroit, and cities like Toledo, need more brothers like this, not fewer.

His knowledge was so clear, so generous, that by the time he finished explaining the problems and solutions, I felt like I could fix a refrigerator myself. That’s real expertise, the kind that educates instead of obscures and confuses.

Brother, I am thankful beyond measure for your honesty, your kindness, and your mastery of your craft. I pray that God continues to enlarge your territory, bless your family, protect your children, and prosper everything you put your hands on.

If you need HVAC, refrigeration, piping, or any work in these trades, this brother is the one. Our fridges are humming beautifully. And that, in its own quiet way, is what Black business excellence looks like.

Scrolling through my feed this Saturday and our local morning news show was highlighting Egg Roll Diva and there was something about her amazing smile and a table of egg rolls that hooked me in.

After our Saturday errands we headed over to 10 Mile and Greenfield for the most delicious platter of egg rolls.
We selected:
- 2 Jamaican Jerk Chicken
- 2 Southwest Chicken
- 2 Corned Beef

For dessert we had her throw in a 🍑Peach Cobbler egg roll

10 / 10 people. These egg rolls were huge and huge on flavor!! A definite do over!!!

Hello MYMM-MI, I wanted to share a recent post I made on LinkedIn:

When companies lose their moral compass, it serves as a reminder that values matter just as much as service.

That’s what led me to switch from Verizon to AT&T back in June, after Verizon, at the drop of a hat, abandoned its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion initiatives.

Instead of calling a call center or walking into a storefront, I decided to give LinkedIn a try. I wanted to choose our next business partner, not just whoever answered the phone.

I was hoping for someone local, but the algorithm had other plans. It connected me with Joe Nero, who’s based all the way in Florida.

From the very first message, Joe was exceptional. He didn’t just send a quote; he made a connection. Through kindness, clear communication, and a deep understanding of what businesses actually need from a cellular partner, he made it make sense for us before crafting a thoughtful proposal to transition our service to AT&T.

Even from another state, he showed up. Joe jumped on Zoom calls at a moment’s notice, followed up with texts to ensure we were confident and comfortable, coordinated every step of delivery, and stayed on a Zoom call as we activated the phones, start to finish.

We never had to leave the office, and we’ve continued to receive the same level of care long after the sale was made.

If every company had a Joe Nero, customer service would feel more like a partnership.

Thank you, Joe. Your professionalism and kindness remind me what being in business is all about.
