A dark and stormy October night, 1857: The S.S. Central America, bound to New York from Havana, battles the high seas during a Category 2 hurricane. That night, over three tons of California Gold Rush Gold sank to the ocean's darkest depths. After a hard struggle, mother nature reigned supreme and took the mighty ship under the surface.
The "Ship of Gold," as its sometimes called, was discovered 160 miles off the coast by the Columbus-America Discovery Group of Ohio. Large amounts of gold, estimated to be worth $100 million to $150 million, were recovered.
These two gold ingot bars come from that same Ship of Gold: the Justh & Hunter Gold Ingot and the Henry Hentsch Gold Ingot. 7 of the 45 recovered ingots were Justh & Hunter ingots. Similarly, only 5 bars of the ones recovered were assayed by Henry Hentsch, causing them to be the rarest of the ingots recovered.
