Beauty may only be skin or feather deep, but we, birds and humans alike, are more than flashy plumage. We are joyful spirits capable of love, who are worthy to be loved in return. A bird whose feathers are marred isn’t broken or lacking. We are all what life has made us, no more but no less, and we all deserve to be accepted just as we are.

Some hopeful news for Carnaby's Cockatoos ❤️

More than 200,000 trees will be planted along a 10km stretch of land south of Mandurah as part of a plan to save Carnaby’s Cockatoo from extinction.

When you and your husband start dressing alike 😁

We couldn't resist this picture of Samantha and Roscoe looking like twins in their outside aviary. Both macaws came from different homes at different times but sport the same missing feathers. While they will never grow those feathers back due to long term feather follicle damage, it doesn't take away from their charm or personality. Both birds are happy, healthy, and get to enjoy their time outside together.

If you have a chance to come for a tour this summer, make sure to stop and say hello to them in their aviary in front of our main building. Samantha is always happy to see visitors!

Feather Destructive Behavior (FDB), often called plucking, affects countless companion birds and can be one of the most heartbreaking challenges bird caregivers face.

What many people don't realize is that plucking isn't always caused by poor care. Medical conditions, stress, anxiety, trauma, hormonal changes, environmental factors, and other challenges can all contribute. Sometimes, despite a caregiver's best efforts, there is no simple answer.

This week's Bird Tips Tuesday shares some ways you can help support a bird struggling with feather destruction and highlights the importance of working with an avian veterinarian.

Remember that a bird's worth is not measured by their feathers. Some of the sweetest, happiest, and most beloved birds I've known were little nudists.
