On August 10, 1899, a 20 year old cyclist born just outside Indianapolis stood on a track in Montreal and did something no Black athlete in America had ever officially done before him: he became the fastest man in his sport on the entire planet. 🚴🏾‍♂️

Marshall "Major" Taylor's story starts in ordinary poverty in rural Marion County, Indiana. His father drove a carriage for a well off Indianapolis family, and their son handed young Taylor his very first bicycle, a rare gift for a Black child in that era. He earned his nickname doing bicycle stunts in a soldier's uniform outside a bike shop as a teenager, then started winning races that mattered. By the mid 1890s he was setting unofficial records at Indianapolis' own Capital City track. Not long after, Indianapolis closed its tracks to Black riders entirely, and the death threats that followed his wins over white competitors pushed him out of his home state for good.

None of that ended his career. On August 10, 1899, more than 12,000 spectators packed Montreal's Queen's Park velodrome to watch riders from Europe, the United States, Canada, and Australia compete for the one mile world professional championship. Taylor won it. Decades later, he wrote about hearing his anthem played that day, on foreign soil, after everything he had survived just to be standing there. And somehow, this is the line he chose to leave behind: "Life is too short for any man to hold bitterness in his heart and that is why I have no feeling against anybody." 🏆

New to the Aurora Bicycle Museum.
The Bicycle Boy, published by McLoughlin Brothers of New York in 1896.
This 16-page children's book was made during the height of America's bicycle craze. The cover is chromolithographed and die-cut in the shape of a boy riding his bicycle.
130 years old and still a great-looking piece of bicycle history.
