Almost every student I’ve spoken with this week has mentioned state testing. Many of them have shared their anxiety, asking questions like, What if I mess up? What if I don’t do well? It’s clear that the pressure they feel is real and heavy. In those moments, I’ve made it a point to speak encouragement over them—to help them pause, take a breath, and reflect on how far they’ve come. I remind them of the challenges they’ve overcome, the growth they’ve shown, and the effort they put in every single day. That matters. That counts.
As we move into the season of state testing, let’s keep things in perspective. These tests are simply one snapshot in time—they do not define your child’s intelligence, potential, or worth. They don’t measure their creativity, their kindness, their resilience, or the unique way they think and see the world. They don’t reflect the way your child lights up a room, helps a friend, or brings new ideas to life. Those are the things that truly matter, and they can’t be measured by a number on a page.
Of course, we want our students to try their best and take testing seriously, but let’s also make sure they know that one test will never sum up all that they are. Let’s lift them up with encouragement, remind them of their strengths, and continue to support them in every way. Together, we can create an environment where effort is celebrated, and identity is never tied to a test score.
