Despite their small size, woodchips are a BIG deal for the sawmill industry, and an equally BIG load for railroads to carry. Many woodchip hoppers are converted from standard designs and given upper body extensions to increase carrying capacity. 36 ft. wood chip hoppers were common throughout the 1960s and into the 80s when larger designs took over.

Walthers' HO Scale 36' Wood Chip Hopper features:
-Limited Edition -- One Time Run of These Roadnumbers!
-Fully Assembled
-Prototypes In Service 1960s to 80s
-Correct 33" Turned-Metal Wheelsets
-Proto MAX(TM) Metal Knuckle Couplers
-Perfect for serving logging, paper and other industries, these models represent older two-bay hoppers converted especially to carry lightweight woodchips with special body extensions.

As train lengths continued to grow throughout the 1960s, railroads were looking for new and powerful power. Electro-Motive Division introduced the GP40 model as the successor to the GP38 in 1965. It was equipped with a EMD 16-645E prime mover producing 3,000 horsepower, a 1,000 hp increase compared to the GP38. Other upgrades included a turbocharger, and improved mechanics. It was a very successful locomotive with over 1000 built until 1971! Most were upgraded into EMD's Dash 2 specifications with new electronics and mechanical components, and many remain in service today!

In the 1960s, Evans Products introduced their 50 ft. double plug door boxcar. Weighing 70 tons, it was a high capacity car designed for loading larger products like lumber, paper products, canned goods, and other palletized goods! Double doors allowed for a wider loading area, and the plug door provided for a tighter, more secure seal. The doors were also flush against the body, providing more protection for the load. These cars were built into the 1980s.

Athearn's HO Scale 50ft. Evans Double Plug Door Box Car features:
-Double 8’ plug door
-Highly-detailed, injection-molded body
-Separately-applied end ladders, and brake wheel
-Fully-assembled and ready-to-run
-Accurately painted and printed for prototypical realism
-Highly-detailed, injection-molded body
-Weighted for trouble-free operation
-Body-mounted McHenry® operating scale knuckle couplers
-Machined metal wheels and RP25 contours operate on all popular brands of track
-Minimum radius: 18”

In the early 1950s, the US Navy was in need of a brand new attack fighter jet. McDonnell Douglas developed the XF4H-1 prototype, making its maiden flight in 1958. This eventually turned into the F-4 Phantom II with 5,195 models built from 1958-81. It was powered by two General Electric J79-GE-17 turbojets with 17,900 pounds of thrust each, and equipped with -an internal M61A1 Vulcan 20mm cannon, improved fire control system, self-sealing fuel tanks, and advanced avionics for all-weather, day/night operations. It was primarily used throughout the Cold War, Middle East conflicts, and the Iran-Iraq War, but most notably during the Vietnam War as a supersonic jet interceptor and fighter-bomber, and placed on reconnaissance missions.

Tamiya's 1:48 scale kit of the Douglas F-4B Phantom features:
-Fuselage length: 370mm, wingspan: 244mm.
-Exhaustive studies of the actual aircraft enabled this precise recreation of the distinctive form.
-The parts breakdown offers ease of assembly.
-J79-GE-8 engine nozzles, cockpit, and landing gear bays are realistically recreated.
-Choose between folded and extended wingtips.
-One-piece horizontal stabilizer right and left sides move in concert.
-Choose between open and closed canopy, and extended and retracted refueling probe/boarding ladder.
-Different types of antennae and cockpit consoles can be chosen depending on the marking option selected.
-Air-to-air missiles (AIM-7E Sparrow and AIM-9G/H Sidewinder) and two types of drop tanks are included. -Includes 2 sitting crew figures, 3 marking options, and masking stickers.

The 40 foot boxcar was once a staple of almost any American freight train or railyard. They hauled all sorts of products whether it be lumber, paper, grain, mail, auto parts, finished automobiles, appliances, and so much more! After World War II, there was a boom of freight traffic, and railroads desired to replace their old and clapped out rolling stock. The Association of American Railroads helped standardize a number of customizable 40 ft. boxcar designs with varying doors, roof styles, and ends. Most of these cars were retired by the 1970s-80s.

Atlas' HO Scale 40' Postwar Boxcar with 8' Door features:
-State of the art highly detailed tooling
-Many separately applied details such as ladders, grab irons, etc.
-4 different end styles – 4/4, Early and Late Improved Dreadnaught or “Dartnot”
-2 different roofs – straight or diagonal panel
-Superior or Youngstown doors
-Seven or eight rung ladders
-Fully detailed underframe
-Free rolling trucks with blackened metal wheelsets
-Carefully researched prototypical paint schemes

Throughout 1940, the Spitfire Mk. I and Mk. II were struggling to maintain air superiority over Messerschmitt's Bf 109. The Royal Air Force looked to a replacement. The Mk. V Spitfire was the result, featuring a more powerful Merlin type 45 engine, three wing armament variants, and fishtail flame damping exhaust stubs. The "b" winged version came equipped with 2 x 7.7mm machine guns and one 20mm cannon in each wing. Later variants like the Mk.IXc were powered by Merlin 60 and 70 series engines. These saw action all throughout WWII, notably for the British Royal Air Force until they were retired by the RAF in 1955.

Tamiya's 1:32 scale kit of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXc features:
-Overall Length: 302mm, Overall Width: 352mm.
-2 kinds of parts for top and bottom engine cowlings, wingtips, rudder, and elevators included.
-Features moveable ailerons. Flaps can be depicted in either up or down position.
-Comes with 3 kinds of markings including one to depict the aircraft piloted by RAF ace Johnnie Johnson.

Trailer-on-flatcar service has its origins dating back to 1870s with P.T. Barnum Circus wagons loaded onto flatcars for transport across the US. In the early 1900s, several experimental TOFC services were trialed across railroads. Chicago Great Western pioneered the modern Piggyback system as we know it in 1936, running between St. Paul, Minnesota and Chicago, Illinois. Throughout the 1950s as the American road network grew rapidly, TOFC service really hit the road with the likes of PRR's TrucTrain, B&O's TrailerJet, D&H's Apollo, among other North American railroads. Today TOFC trains are some of the hottest on the mainline, getting priority over most freight trains as they race along at track speed, often mixed with intermodal container traffic.

Atlas' N Scale 50' Piggyback Flatcar with Two Trailers features:
-AccuMate® couplers
-Detailed printing

Hi-cube boxcars began appearing in the 1960s-70s to address oversized loads and increase carrying capacity, all while reducing the amount of boxcars needed on one train. These cars carry almost anything ranging from palletized goods, furniture, appliances, paper, canned goods, and more! Hi-cubes are easily denoted by white stripes on either end of the roof, warning of their "EXCESS HEIGHT". Sometimes this design is paired with a "waffle-side" design. Introduced in the mid 1970s, these exterior ribs, looking as if the car is hot out of a waffle iron, represent recesses on the inside walls where wall-mounted tie down rings reside to more securely hold a load down. The interior walls are also smooth to prevent loads from being punctured or snagged. These cars were placed into service hauling furniture, appliances, paper rolls, among other sensitive loads. Many of these cars are still in use and being built today!

Athearn Roundhouse's HO Scale 50ft. Waffle High Cube Plug Door Box Car features:
-Separate brake wheel
-Body-mounted McHenry® operating scale knuckle couplers
-Machined wheels with RP25 contours
-Weighted for optimum performance
-Fully-assembled and ready to run
-Highly-detailed, injection-molded body
-Painted and printed for realistic decoration

05/23/2026

In the earliest days of railroading, derailed locomotives and rolling stock could be rerailed using jacks and some good old fashioned elbow grease, but as they grew larger by the mid 1800s, hand-operated cranes were employed. Steam-powered cranes on American railroads became more common come the 1890s, with many built by Brownhoist and Bucyrus. These were converted into diesel power around the 1970s-80s. Modernized cranes are still used today in MOW service and derailment cleanup.

Athearn's HO Scale 200-Ton Crane and 50 ft. Gondola features:
-Rotating boom
-Boom and Blocks raise and lower
-Machined metal wheels with RP25 contours
-Weighted for optimum performance
-Body-mounted McHenry® operating scale knuckle couplers
