What is happening? Today there is a great silence over the earth, a great silence, and stillness, a great silence because the King sleeps; the earth was in terror and was still, because God slept in the flesh and raised up those who were sleeping from the ages. God has died in the flesh, and the underworld has trembled.

Truly he goes to seek out our first parent like a lost sheep; he wishes to visit those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death. He goes to free the prisoner Adam and his fellow-prisoner Eve from their pains, he who is God, and Adam’s son.

The Lord goes in to them holding his victorious weapon, his cross. When Adam, the first created man, sees him, he strikes his breast in terror and calls out to all: ‘My Lord be with you all.’ And Christ in reply says to Adam: ‘And with your spirit.’ And grasping his hand he raises him up, saying: ‘Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.

Blessed Feast!

In the Eastern Orthodox Church, Palm Sunday (also called the Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem) is one of the Twelve Great Feasts. It commemorates Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem, riding on a donkey (a symbol of peace rather than a war horse), just days before His Passion. Crowds greeted Him with palm branches, spread their garments on the road, and shouted “Hosanna!” (meaning “Save us!” or “Save now!”), hailing Him as the Messiah and King of Israel.

The Procession’s Core Significance
The procession with blessed branches reenacts and makes present this biblical event (described in all four Gospels: Matthew 21:1–11, Mark 11:1–11, Luke 19:28–44, John 12:12–19). It symbolizes:
• Triumph and victory — Palm branches (or willow branches in some regions where palms are unavailable) represent joy, victory over death, and the people’s recognition of Jesus as King. In ancient times, palms symbolized triumph; Orthodox tradition also links them to resurrection themes.

• Christ’s voluntary path to the Cross — The same crowds who welcomed Him with palms would soon cry “Crucify Him!” The procession highlights the irony and depth of Christ’s kingship: a humble, peaceful entry that leads directly to His suffering and redemptive death for humanity’s salvation, followed by His glorious Resurrection.

• The faithful’s participation — By holding and waving branches while singing hymns (such as “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord”), worshippers actively greet Christ as their own King and Lord, affirming faith in Him as the promised Messiah. It is both a celebration of His arrival and a solemn reminder that this “triumph” foreshadows the Passion.

To pray is to descend with the mind into the heart, and there to stand before the face of the Lord, ever-present, all-seeing, within you.”
— St. Theophan the Recluse

He continues: “Standing with consciousness and attention in the heart, cry out unceasingly, ‘Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy upon me,’ without having in your mind any visual concept or image.”

In hesychasm we do not chase an empty mind.

We fill the heart with the living presence of Christ.

While modern meditation often seeks emptiness, a blank slate, a void, a temporary escape, the ancient practice of the Jesus Prayer leads us into true stillness. It does so by calling upon the Divine Person who created us and loves us.

No mere technique for calm.
No substitute of absence.

This is relationship. This is presence. This is the mind descending into the heart to stand before God Himself.

The world offers emptiness as peace.

Orthodoxy offers the fullness of Christ.
Which will you choose today? 🙏

As a neurodiverse person who struggles with complex trauma and claustrophobia, my anxiety at church has been an issue, especially as our parish has experienced explosive growth, but our facility has not (yet!). I wear an Oura ring and Sundays are generally my highest stress days, which seems so odd 🫣🧐

But I’ve found a simple, practical tool that REALLY helps! Humming! That last peak is my stress when we arrived and the dip is me humming along with the choir throughout the service. MEASURABLE difference!

Have you tried this method? What else has helped you remind your nervous system that you’re safe? When my stress is too high, my ability to engage in prayer is almost non-existent. I was SO much more present today and I’m so grateful for these little tools that help me regulate my fried nervous system. Lord have mercy!
