Carol Henderson-Life by Design I help both children and adults who have experienced an emotional or physical traumatic event to achi And now, he was on 23 medications.

At an early age when I got started...my grandfather was a pharmacist, back in the day, when many medicines were compounded. I got to help fill the capsules when I visited in the summer. Many years later, after I married, my husband, he broke his back and had a spinal fusion that didn't go well. That led to him taking over 18 different medications each day (that's not 18 pills, that's 18 prescripti

ons!)

He was only 39! This led to two heart attacks, 3 stints, and a quadruple bypass. At his worst, he was on a walker and often in a wheel chair when we went out. Over the years, I researched many ways to try to help him with his pain and other health related problems. Fast forward to today, he is down to only two prescriptions at a much lower dosage and leads a very active life.

What can I say?

I have been married to the most amazing man on the planet for most of my life!

I was 23 and he was 28 when we met. Neither one of us was looking for a relationship or marriage even though we actually met in church!

We don't advise two month courtships, however, when God says ‘get married’, you better obey!

🙌And you better make sure that it's God! 🙌

We've had many people say that ours was a match made in heaven! And we agree!

Keith was running the Maco paint and body shop in Amarillo Texas. As we were sitting in the office that morning…It BLEW UP!!!!

A short 2 months after we first met, we were married! When we married he didn’t even have a job because of the explosion. He had two children Colby and Amanda.

A couple of years later we added our first son to our family! Bradley Keith Henderson! 14 months later Robert Erin Henderson joined us! At that point we moved to the Dallas area and Jordan Daniel Henderson was born in March.

That gave us three babies under the age of 3! Our lives were very full!

We moved back to Amarillo and went about our daily lives! Many ups and downs, some health issues, both of us having our own businesses plus the excitement of raising 3 teenage boys!

This past two years however, have been a real challenge with health and other situations that were out of our control!!! (like the fires in February 2024!)

Tomorrow we celebrate our 50th Wedding Anniversary!!!

It seems like just yesterday that we first met!

As I sit here this weekend remembering the days leading up to our wedding 50 years ago, I don't know what to say. I wouldn't take anything in the world for the relationship Keith and I've had!

❤️ Have there been hard times, Yes!

❤️ Have there been joyous times, Yes!

❤️ Have there been times of lack, Yes!

❤️ Have there been times of overwhelming abundance, Yes!

I can say that I would not change a thing!

God has had a plan for our lives from the very beginning and without walking where we walked we wouldn't be the people we are today!

I love you Keith Henderson ❤️

More today than yesterday, Less than tomorrow!!!

That is inscribed in our rings we put on our fingers 50 years ago tomorrow!

LOVE THIS ANALOGY
You're holding a cup of coffee and someone accidentally bumps into you, causing it to spill everywhere.
Why did you spill the coffee?
"Because someone bumped into me."
Wrong answer.
You spilled the coffee because there was coffee in your cup. If there had been tea in the cup, you would have spilled tea.
Whatever is inside the cup is what will spill out.
So, when life shakes you up, whatever is inside you will come out.
It's easy to pretend everything's fine until you're shaken.
So, we have to ask ourselves, "What's in my cup?"
When life gets tough, what spills over? Joy? Gratitude? Peace? Humility? Anger? Bitterness? A victim mentality? A tendency to quit?
Rember LIFE gives you the cup; YOU choose what to fill it with.🤎

What happens to your body when you stop eating sugar — A timeline

Within the first hour, your blood sugar levels begin to stabilize as the glucose from your last meal starts to be metabolized.

Insulin, the hormone responsible for regulating blood sugar, works to ensure that glucose is either used for immediate energy or stored for later use.

Without the influx of sugar, your body relies on the remaining glucose and glycogen stores for energy. This stabilization helps prevent the rapid spikes and drops in blood sugar that can lead to mood swings, fatigue, and cravings. Within one day of cutting out sugar, your liver starts to break down glycogen into glucose to maintain blood sugar levels.

This process, called glycogenolysis, ensures a steady supply of energy despite the absence of dietary sugar. You might begin to experience mild withdrawal symptoms such as headaches, irritability, and fatigue as your body starts to adapt to the lack of sugar.

These symptoms are due to the sudden decrease in dopamine levels, a neurotransmitter associated with the brain's reward and pleasure centers, which sugar consumption often spikes. After two days, your body begins to enter a state of ketosis, a metabolic process where the body burns stored fats for energy in the absence of sufficient glucose. Ketones, which are byproducts of fat metabolism, become the primary energy source for your body and brain. This transition can lead to an increase in energy levels and mental clarity, though some people may experience what's known as the "keto flu"—a collection of symptoms including nausea, headaches, and dizziness as the body adapts to burning fat instead of sugar. These symptoms are generally temporary and can be mitigated by staying hydrated and replenishing electrolytes. By the end of the first week without sugar, your taste preferences may start to change. Foods that once seemed bland might now taste more flavorful as your taste buds become more sensitive to the natural sweetness in fruits and vegetables. This heightened sensitivity can help reduce cravings for sugary foods. Your body continues to produce ketones, and as it becomes more efficient at using fat for fuel, you may notice a reduction in body fat and improved metabolic health. Insulin sensitivity improves, meaning your body becomes more effective at utilizing glucose, reducing the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Around two weeks into your sugar-free journey, your energy levels stabilize, and you may find yourself experiencing fewer energy slumps throughout the day. This is because your body no longer relies on the quick but short-lived energy boost from sugar, instead using the more stable energy provided by fats and proteins. The reduction in sugar intake also decreases inflammation in the body, which can lead to improvements in skin health, reduced joint pain, and a lower risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and certain cancers. The absence of sugar helps maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria, which is crucial for digestion, immune function, and overall health. After a month without sugar, the benefits become even more pronounced. Your body’s insulin sensitivity continues to improve, and you may notice significant weight loss, particularly around the abdominal area.

This reduction in visceral fat, the fat that surrounds internal organs, decreases the risk of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases. Your liver function improves as it no longer has to process excessive amounts of fructose, which can lead to fatty liver disease if consumed in large amounts over time.

Mental clarity and cognitive function also benefit from the reduced sugar intake, as the brain operates more efficiently on a stable supply of energy from fats and proteins. In the long term, maintaining a sugar-free diet can lead to a more balanced mood, reduced anxiety and depression, and improved overall mental health. The reduction in systemic inflammation contributes to better heart health, lower blood pressure, and a stronger immune system. By eliminating sugar, you are also less likely to develop dental issues such as cavities and gum disease, as sugar is a primary food source for the harmful bacteria in your mouth.

It's great advice!!

The Crabby Ripple Effect: How What You Give Comes Back to You

Picture this: It’s one of those days. You’re cranky and mad about everything from the dishes in the sink to the existence of gravity. You shuffle around the house, muttering under your breath, and suddenly, chaos erupts. The kids are bickering over whose turn it is to sit on that corner of the couch, the dog is barking at a leaf, and even the cat—who usually couldn’t care less—is giving you side-eye like, Really? This is the vibe today?

It’s like the entire household has joined forces to amplify your bad mood, and you’re left wondering: Why is everyone acting this way?!

Spoiler alert: It’s you.

Energy Is a Boomerang

Here’s the deal: energy isn’t subtle. Whether you’re radiating joy or wallowing in frustration, it’s contagious. It spreads like peanut butter on toast—thick, sticky, and unavoidable.

Your kids and pets pick up on it when you're crabby. And instead of being the warm, cuddly companions you secretly hoped would cheer you up, they mirror your mood right back at you.

The dog starts pacing, the cat refuses to be held, and the kids? They’ve turned into tiny, emotional mirrors, reflecting every ounce of irritation you’re projecting. It’s a sitcom waiting to happen—if only it weren’t so annoyingly true.

The Qi Connection: Staying in Your Truth

The good news is this isn’t a one-way street. Just like crankiness can ripple through your household, so can calm, joy, and love. The key is staying in your truth—being grounded, present, and honest about your feelings without letting your emotions hijack the whole day.

Here are a few Qi essentials to keep in mind:

Stay in the Moment: Instead of letting your mind run wild with Why is everyone against me?! Take a deep breath. Focus on the now. You’re not fighting a war—just a bad mood.

Break Old Patterns: Resist the urge to fall into the habit of snapping at everyone just because you’re feeling lousy. Those old habits don’t belong in this moment.

Choose Joy: Even when you’re not 100%, you can still find small moments of happiness. It all counts-a warm cup of tea, the sound of laughter, or how your cat’s tail flicks when trying to act aloof.

Stop: Look around, clap your hands, or blink rapidly for a few minutes. Get yourself out of flight or fight and again be in the moment.

The Humor in It All

Let’s face it—there’s something hilariously ironic about being cranky and then getting crankiness thrown right back at you. The universe is saying, Oh, you don’t like this vibe? Then why are you serving it?

Imagine if pets could talk. The dog would say, “Look, I wanted to be your emotional support animal today, but you’re making it hard.” And the cat? “I’d comfort you, but your energy is ruining my nap.”

Even the kids are unwitting comedians. One minute, they’re mirroring your grumpiness; the next, they’re saying something so wildly out of left field that you can’t help but laugh. (Like when my youngest announced, “Mom, you look like a mad potato today.” Thanks, sweetie.)

The Shift: From Crabby to Calm

Here’s the magic part: the ripple effect reverses when you consciously change your energy.

I remember sitting down on one particularly crabby day, taking a deep breath, and admitting aloud, “Guys, I’m not feeling great, and I think my bad mood is spilling over. I’m sorry.”

The kids softened instantly. “It’s okay, Mom,” one of them said. “Do you want my favorite blanket?” The dog came over with his tail wagging, and even the cat decided I was finally worthy of a lap visit.

That slight shift—acknowledging my truth and letting go of the negativity—changed the entire atmosphere.

Happiness Is a Choice (Even When You’re Crabby)

Happiness and joy aren’t just things that happen to you; they’re things you create, even on your most challenging days. It’s not about pretending to feel good when you don’t—it’s about choosing to find lightness wherever you can.

Instead of snapping at the kids, laugh with them about how ridiculous it is that you’re all fighting over a couch.
Instead of grumbling at the dog, take a moment to appreciate how his wagging tail never gives up on you.

And instead of glaring at the cat for ignoring you, admire how effortlessly they stay in their truth.

What You Put Out, You Get Back

The biggest lesson? You get back what you put out. If you’re radiating love, presence, and calm, your world will reflect that. But if you’re angry or frustrated, don’t be surprised if that greets you at the door.

So, the next time you feel crabby, remember to take a deep breath, stay in the moment, and choose joy. Because when you’re in your truth, the world has a funny way of becoming joyful and loving again—even if you look like a “mad potato” while doing it.

Cheers to better vibes and brighter days!
Dr. Ruby
