⏩Use the code SWITCH to get 3 credits right off the bat, good for 6 books during the BOGO sale! (Past members not eligible)
⏩Members also get 30% off additional purchases (including 30% off sale prices like the Pride sale and June Kids sale) as long as your membership is active!
⏩10% of every membership payment and 20-30% of every audiobook purchase is sent directly to us, so you can help fund a local community space instead of Bezos' next superyacht or Spotify's ICE recruitment ads

📙 Taiwan Travelogue
By Yáng Shuāng-Zǐ
Translated by Lin King

May 1938. The young novelist Aoyama Chizuko has sailed from her home in Nagasaki, Japan, and arrived in Taiwan. She’s been invited there by the Japanese government ruling the island, though she has no interest in their official banquets or imperialist agenda. Instead, Chizuko longs to experience real island life and to taste as much of its authentic cuisine as her famously monstrous appetite can bear.

Soon a Taiwanese woman—who is younger even than she is, and who shares the characters of her name—is hired as her interpreter and makes her dreams come true. The charming, erudite, meticulous Chizuru arranges Chizuko’s travels all over the Land of the South and also proves to be an exceptional cook. Over scenic train rides and braised pork rice, lively banter and winter melon tea, Chizuko grows infatuated with her companion and intent on drawing her closer. But something causes Chizuru to keep her distance. It’s only after a heartbreaking separation that Chizuko begins to grasp what the “something” is.

Disguised as a translation of a rediscovered text by a Japanese writer, this novel was a sensation on its first publication in Mandarin Chinese in 2020 and won Taiwan’s highest literary honor, the Golden Tripod Award. Taiwan Travelogue unburies lost colonial histories and deftly reveals how power dynamics inflect our most intimate relationships.

The San Jacinto parking lot will be closed for the duration of the Route 66 Festival (from today, 6/4 - 6/13) to allow for food trucks in the evenings.

If you're visiting our store, there is still free street parking all up and down 6th, including directly in front of our store (though the street section in front of the parking lot is handicapped only and a no parking bus stop!)

There is also the Heal the City lot directly behind our building on 7th - Heal the City closes at 5 so there should be open parking in the evenings! Please be mindful of parking there during the day as it is intended for patients seeking healthcare!

Congratulations to our Independent Bookstore Day giveaway winner! There were over 300 entries and we gave out over 400 bookstore crawl passports this year! Jasmine filled 2 entire totes (!!) with all the giveaway goodies.

Thank you to all the readers and book lovers who participated in our bookstore crawl this year, and for our wonderful book community for supporting Amarillo's indie bookstores and helping us celebrate! We do this for y'all, and we couldn't do it without y'all 🫶

Another thank you to the bookstores who participated in the crawl and donated items to the giveaway this year - we're going to have to pick multiple winners next year if y'all keep being this generous!

💐✨THIS SATURDAY, MAY 9, celebrate Mother's Day (or just a shopping and food spree) with us and 70 other vendors at Arts in the Sunset! Peep the next slide for our booth neighbors this year and swipe again to see all 70!

This is our biggest pop-up of the year for the last 4 years, but it only lasts from 11-4 (and most of the food vendors sell out ASAP so if you're eyeing some bread, cheese, cookies, better get there early 👀)

There is a magic show to entertain the kiddos, food trucks for lunch, and live music to provide those sweet ✨vibes✨

The weather is looking promising too so make sure to stop by and see what all the vendors have to offer! There will also be some Lubbock vendors for the first time ever!

See y'all there 😎
