Save the Date: June 18 for What We Should Know for 'America's 250th' (Notices 6-6-26)

"It’s America’s Birthday, and He’ll Be Mad if He Wants To," reads the headline in the New York Times over a Richard Kreitner review of Eddie Glaude Jr.'s book, AMERICA, U.S.A.: How Race Shadows the Nation’s Anniversaries," "In 'America, U.S.A.,' Eddie Glaude Jr. looks back at the country’s past anniversaries with skepticism and pain."

Professor Glaude will be the lead panelist at our next Journal-isms Roundtable, to be held Thursday, June 18, at 7 p.m. Eastern, in person in Washington, D.C., and by Zoom.

Abraham Jimenez Enoa, a Cuban journalist in exile, has been chosen as the Percy Qoboza Foreign Journalist of the Year for 2026 by the National Association of Black Journalists.

This piece may be long and of particular interest only to those who value good and honest journalism, but the Guardian saw fit to publish it today.
----------------------

The long read

I launched Cuba’s first independent magazine. And that’s when my troubles began

My friends and I wanted to tell the story of Cuban life, without interference. Before long, I was being isolated, monitored and interrogated

A version of this essay was previously published in the Dial under the title The Sneeze. Translation by Lily Meyer

Update: "60 Minutes" shakeup; Cecilia Vega out [What Paramount's Merger Plan Has to Do With You (Notices 5-27-26)]

Just as Seth Stern of the Freedom of the Press Foundation told us in yesterday 's post < https://tinyurl.com/mubfx9bw > that " “I’d say that what’s happening at CBS is a pretty good predictor of what is likely to happen at CNN," citing that as one reason for us to sign his letter opposing Paramount's merger plans, Benjamin Mullin of the New York Times today reports:

CBS News Names an Outsider, Nick Bilton, to Lead ‘60 Minutes’

Mr. Bilton, a tech journalist and filmmaker, said he would bring new voices to the show. The overhaul by Bari Weiss, CBS’s editor in chief, included the firing of the correspondent Cecilia Vega.

Bari Weiss, the editor in chief of CBS News, signaled a new direction for the nation’s top news program on Thursday, replacing the executive producer of “60 Minutes” with Nick Bilton, a longtime tech journalist and documentarian who has never worked in traditional broadcast news.

The appointment came as part of a significant shake-up at the venerable Sunday evening news program. Cecilia Vega [pictured], a correspondent, was fired on Thursday, as was the current executive producer, Tanya Simon, who had spent more than 30 years at the program.. . .
