The Story of the Spoon

This spoon has made every single candle with me since the days of yore at Upside! That’s right, every single candle. Any guesses how many candles that is?

Even when I trained others to make candles, I use this spoon and I have them use another because for some reason in my brain that’s just how it has to be. And I’m a weirdo.

Every scent I’ve tested, blended, gone to market with and scratched has been made with this single wooden spoon. I’m sure the other candle makers would gasp that I’m mixing the scent pools but it’s my story book so I’ll just keep blending it this way because it seems to work 🤷🏼‍♀️

I get super sentimental about a lot of things and this is one of them. A lot of you don’t know me (I’m Ashley and I probably should’ve started with that) and this is no different. I hate change, I appreciate consistency and I love a good steady hand or in this case, a spoon that gets the job done. But I also have a bird brain that gets me distracted, loves shiny new things and wants to try it all, NOW.

I share this only to say that a lot of times in my business I’ve felt I needed to change, update, match or BE something different for fear of missing out, getting more or capturing some sort of “corner of the market” - you know, whatever delusion we tell ourselves in all actuality. But over the last few years I’m so thankful I’ve stayed the course, trusted my gut, learned lessons even if they were the hard way. I was the spoon. I’m going to keep being the spoon as I stare down the next few months ahead of me. Maybe this is a reminder to you too. Keep going, hard work pays off and maybe the outside forces aren’t needing your attention right now and it’s okay to stay the course. Oh and get a wooden spoon, they are so resourceful 🤣
