Sometimes a search doesn’t end in recovery but we’re so glad this hunter had a piece of mind after Henry showed me many signs this deer was still alive. Don’t ask me how he knows but the nose knows.

Pictures are proof of life on the injured buck but if the weather stays cold he should recover with the non fatal injury.

Thanks again for the call and the opportunity to help out!

Put this bruiser on the tailgate after our first PA track. Special thanks to Doc for the call and having enough faith in us to give it a go. So glad we could help you find this guy! That being said we now have our PA license and just in time for gun season. Give us a shout if you need some help, we make no guarantees but we will give it our best!

Tracking is a part of hunting as defined by Pennsylvania law. While it’s not unusual for hunters to be following blood trails after legal hunting hours, those doing so or otherwise tracking wounded game after hours or on closed season days should call the Game Commission’s Central Dispatch Center (1-833-PGC-HUNT) so dispatchers can authorize the activity and notify the appropriate game warden that tracking is taking place. As of the publication of this digest, it is unlawful to use a drone in any part of hunting, including tracking and recovery of game.
Leashed tracking dogs can be used to aid in the recovery of a deer, bear or elk shot lawfully in an open season.
No permit is required.
The tracking-dog handler must be properly licensed for the animal being tracked and wear the required amount of fluorescent orange clothing for the season, and cannot dispatch wounded game that will be tagged by a hunter. All laws pertaining to the taking of game apply. A tracking-dog handler must abide by hunting hours and notify the Game Commission if tracking is to occur outside them. Trackers cannot
charge for their services on state game lands. Permission is needed before entering private property.d

(a)  General rule.--Except as provided in subsection (b), it is unlawful for any person to make use of a dog in any manner to hunt for or to take big game or to permit a dog owned, controlled or harbored by that person to pursue, harass, chase, scatter, injure or make use of a dog to kill any big g...

Hey everyone,

I wanted to take a moment to update my page and better reflect a focus on leashed dog tracking.

Hi, if you don’t know me yet, my name is Casity, and this little guy is Henry, my Dachshund. We met in August of this year, and as of today, he’s just over 7 months old. Henry comes from a long line of exceptional tracking dogs—he’s actually one of the great-great-grandpups of the legendary John Jeanneney. If you’re not familiar with him, he quite literally wrote the book on leashed dog tracking, especially in New York State. Jeanneney was a pioneer who helped legalize this practice in many states.

From the day I brought Henry home, he’s shown a prey drive unlike any dog I’ve ever owned. All summer, we’ve been working on mock trails to build his skills, and even though we’re new to this as a team, we learn something valuable every time we head into the woods in pursuit of a deer.

I’ve been hunting in PA and NY since I was 12, but honestly, this side of hunting wasn’t even on my radar until my husband had to call in a tracking dog for a deer we couldn’t recover. I tagged along—and I’m so glad I did. I instantly fell in love with Bren, the dog that helped in the recovery of his deer. I was so impressed by the teamwork between Bren and her handler, Jason, that I knew I wanted to be part of that world.

So, when the opportunity came up to get Henry, I couldn’t pass it up. I even gave up my trip to southwest Missouri this year just to bring him home! Henry has been everything I dreamed of and more. He’s already an amazing little tracker, and we’re just getting started on our journey together.

Of course, beyond all that, Henry is first and foremost my boy—the family’s baby—and, as I like to joke, my forever puppy (yes, that’s a “Boss Baby” reference!).

I’ll be making a separate post soon with more details for anyone looking for a leashed tracking dog. For now, I wanted to share a bit of our background and story here.
