Tips on: The Short Story
WRITING A STORY BASED ON A PICTURE
ADVICE: Prepare to write 5-6 paragraphs of 5-7 sentences each
1st paragraph is about the character in the picture.
Describe him/her in great detail: Facial features, dress code, mannerisms, etc.
2nd paragraph is about a scene or location for your story.
Where is the story taking place? (The beach, a party, in front a house, at school, etc).
Place the character in a location that can help you bring your story to life. Be graphic: Make use of the 5 senses in your description.
Bring the person to life: What does he/she smell, what does he/she hear, and what does he/she see?)
3rd paragraph: Involve the person in a situation that creates action in the story. (Is the person taking advantage of someone else? Or, is he/she being advantaged?)
Describe the situation in great detail.
4th paragraph: Bring the situation involving the person in the picture to a seeming highpoint. Be graphic. Use full descriptions & excite your reader.
5th paragraph: Bring the story to an unexpected end by switching to one of the following moods: tragic, surprising, daunting, malicious, revengeful, sad, happy, or exhilarating.
You are the creator of the story. So, you can end the story any way you wish.
