One of the most influential figures in 20th-century Italian design, spanning architecture, furniture, ceramics, and publishing.

Based in Milan, Ponti shaped modern Italian aesthetics through his refined design philosophy — combining elegance, lightness, craftsmanship, and innovation. In 1928, he founded Domus magazine, creating a global platform for design culture and modern creative thought.

Ponti’s work is defined by slender, geometric forms, expressive use of color, and a poetic balance between tradition and modernity. His iconic Superleggera Chair (1957) remains a benchmark of engineering, proportion, and timeless beauty.

Today, Gio Ponti’s designs are held in major museum collections and remain highly sought after by collectors, with strong demand in the international mid-century and Italian modern design market. We at CW&E are thrilled to have a pair of beautiful reupholstered 1950s, mid-century, tall back dining chairs in the style of Gio Ponti and Luigi Colli (slides 7-9).

Comfort became sculptural in the 1970s.
This pair of German lounge chairs, attributed to Dreipunkt, captures the confident softness that defined European seating of the decade.

Upholstered in supple mustard-toned leather, the chairs demonstrate the material intelligence of the period — leather pulled tightly at structural points while allowed to relax and crease naturally across the seating surface. The result is a softness that reads as deliberate design.

Pieces like these speak to the shift in 1970s interiors toward deeper comfort, informal elegance, and furniture designed to be lived with rather than merely observed. A warm and sculptural addition to a living room, library, or conversation space.

Velvet defined a certain kind of luxury in the 1960s and 70s — one that was tactile, atmospheric, and unapologetically sensual.

The textile itself is where the piece comes alive. Velvet, in this period, was not simply decorative. It was used to absorb light, to create tonal variation, to invite touch. Here, on these chairs, the patterned upholstery adds a further layer — geometric yet softened by pile, structured yet yielding.

Reupholstered with careful attention to the chair’s original proportions, the fabric sits taut where it should, and relaxed where comfort demands. This is where craftsmanship reveals itself.

This curated set of four woven indigo throw blankets from South and West Africa brings together distinct regional languages of pattern, colour, and craft.

Draped over a chair, folded at the foot of a bed or hung as a textile, these blankets act as both function and form.

This pair of German lounge chairs, attributed to Dreipunkt, reflects the confident material experimentation that characterised West German furniture design in the early–mid 1970s.
During this period, German manufacturers increasingly embraced deep seating, sculptural volumes, and richly coloured leather upholstery — furniture designed not only for form but for physical ease.

Founded in the post-war design boom, Dreipunkt developed a reputation for producing modern seating that balanced robust construction with relaxed, inviting silhouettes. Their pieces frequently explored the idea of “architectural softness” — forms that appear structured and grounded, yet yield generously to the body.
These lounge chairs embody that philosophy.

A dialogue across eras.

Contemporary ceramic expression. Handcrafted furniture. Industrial vernacular.

At the centre: an elegant Italian tall-back dining chair in the style of Gio Ponti / Luigi Colli, Italy, 1950s. Behind it, a handmade dining table by Culture, Wit & Elegance anchors the composition.

Resting upon it: Roche Dry’s ceramic “Warrior” sculptures. Hand-formed vessels crowned with sand-cast brass elements. To the side, a red iron tractor stool brings industrial clarity.

Curated at Culture, Wit & Elegance — Lisbon.
