Duzuki Saw
A Dozuki saw is a traditional Japanese pull saw characterized by a rigid metal spine running along the back of its ultra-thin blade. Essentially Japan’s counterpart to the Western backsaw, its design keeps the blade under tension on the pull stroke, preventing buckling and ensuring exceptionally straight, precise cuts. Because the spine adds rigidity, the blade can be incredibly thin (often 0.3 mm or less), resulting in a micro-fine kerf that removes very little material and leaves a glassy, near-planed finish.
The defining trade-off of a Dozuki is its cutting depth: the rigid metal spine limits how deep the saw can cut into a piece of wood, making it specialized for shallow precision joinery like dovetails, tenon shoulders, and small miter joints.
To learn proper body mechanics and hand positioning for getting straight cuts with a Japanese backsaw, watch this guide:

Assembling the Mitsukude Kumiko Pattern

The Mitsukude pattern, also known as the three-way joint, is a highly advanced, traditional Japanese woodworking technique used to construct the foundational triangular and hexagonal lattice grids in Kumiko art. Translating to "three-way joint," it requires three interlocking wooden slats to intersect at exact 60-degree angles to form a seamless, geometric web without the use of nails or glue.
