Seizo Shinano No. 45, circa late 1960s, good condition.

Shinano was a famed luthier in Japan in the 1960s and 70s who ran a small factory of artisans producing a full range of classical guitars, from beginner models to the finest professional grade instruments. At the time this No. 70 was built, it was the seventh highest (of nine in the Shinano line of the time) in price and quality, so was intended for advanced students looking for finely crafted and fine sounding instruments at a reasonable pricepoint.

Solid cedar soundboard, solid Indian rosewood back, laminated Indian rosewood sides, rosewood bridge and fretboard, bone nut.

Tonally, this Shinano has good volume, projection, and sustain, and is well balanced, despite its strong and resonant bass. It is very easy and surprisingly enjoyable to play.

Japanese classicals from this era are in my opinion one of the very best values in mid-range classical guitars, delivering great tone and solid construction at a very reasonable price. They also have far more character than current offerings from today's large classical producers.
