I came across Winderen as a bit brand as I had gone through a few different bit types with my horse Spirit who I’ve had for 11 years now, and he often ducked behind the contact / vertical, but at times could get hot.
In working through a few different bit options over the years, I discovered he wasn’t a fan of tongue pressure, so I moved away from a lozenge bit (previous to the loose ring gold lozenge bit in the picture, I used a Turtle Top D Ring, which I found too bulky in his mouth which has a decent sized toungue and fleshy lips in there already!).
I found the Ported bit a lot better, but if I was a little bit too quick with my hand or made a mistake, it seemed a bit unforgiving on him.
So I thought I’d try a similar smaller ported concept but with a gel material, which is the first bit I bought from Winderen (this is the ported Mullen mouth with a D Ring cheek piece), which was better, but still not perfect.

I then moved on to what I ride in today, which is the Winderen large loose ring, flexi Mullen mouth - which has been an absolute game changer for having him seeking the contact and being quiet and still in his mouth (he chewed constantly with a lozenge).

So I thought after all that - wouldn’t it be great if we could try some of these bits, and get some feedback from our horses in the different environments we’re going to ride them in, and make a final decision from there?! Much kinder on the bank account that’s for sure, and seeing how much better Spirit’s way of going is in this bit, I wish I’d looked and listened a bit harder over time to the signs of possible discomfort he was showing.
I decided I’d bring the full range of Winderen bits to NZ and provide a bit bank, so anyone can buy a bit with a 30 day trial and swap the bit for another if it wasn’t right (see website for T’s C’s 😊).
We’re constantly learning with our horses, and having some time to try out something as important as a bit provides some comfort in making that important equipment choice.
