Have you noticed a rise in the number of people needing help? What could we do better to make a positive difference?

Homelessness and drug use have surged “ten-fold” over the past two years, community workers have revealed.
Members of Marlborough District Council’s strategy and community partnerships committee last Thursday heard concerns over “horrific” rates of m**h drug addiction, the rising cost of living, and gaps in mental health systems.
Local charities were under huge pressure said St Vincent de Paul Picton manager Marianne Govaerts.
The measure of a community was “not found in its waterfront, its tourism numbers, or its economic success,” she explained.
“It is found in how we treat the people who are struggling the most.”
She said St Vincent de Paul Picton had given $65,700 in financial assistance to the community this year so far. This compared to compared to $34,500 in 2024.
All the organisation’s income comes from its second-hand shop.
“St Vincent de Paul is a charity organisation. We are not a social service,” she said.
“The community is becoming more reliant on us as a social service. Our team is based on retirees, not social service providers, skilled in very necessary trauma informed work. “
With support from The Sounds Souper Soup run manager Michelle Campbell and the Salvation Army’s Bridget Nolan, Marianne used the public forum session before the committee meeting to ask councillors to help.
Leadership was needed to help solve the issues and to push central government to do more, she said.
Marlborough Sounds ward councillor Barbara Faulls said the trend for those in need was going up, not just in homelessness numbers but in foodbank and other demands.
It was a story that needed to be told, she said. “It’s heart-breaking.”
Committee chair Gerald Hope said there perhaps should be a report through the mayor’s office on the prevalence of m**hamphetamine in Marlborough.
He said it was a growing issue which concerned him.
However, while local government could provide some support, it was central government that should do the most. “In more and more cases, it is transferred to the regions to undertake. What’s our role?”
Marianne said council could lead. “You can support partnerships with iwi, health providers, charities, churches, and community organisations that already work tirelessly to support vulnerable people.
“You can ensure future planning includes affordable housing, access to essential services, halfway housing, council contracting a social worker available in Picton, hot public showers, and community spaces where people feel safe, connected, supported and heard.”
