Heru Parāoa - Whale Bone Hair Ornament

Traditional Māori heru are combs worn as functional hair ornaments by both men and women. The decorations on pre-European heru were often a symbol of mana and prestige.

This taonga was hand-carved from parāoa (whalebone) by Alex Sands and measures 128 x 47 x 4 mm.

Hei matau are fish hooks fashioned in the style of Māui. These are symbols of abundance, prosperity, and wealth. They are also considered to provide good luck and safety on water, and are therefore thoughtful gifts for travellers.

This matau was hand-carved by Andy Ruskin from kawakawa pounamu. It measures 51 x 41mm and has an adjustable hand-braided black cord.

This Manaia Pouwhenua - Antiqued Bone Carved Pendant was hand-carved and finished by master carver and artist Yuri Terenyi.

It boasts very fine ornamental designs and is finished with an antique style natural onion based stain. It measures 11 x 2 cm and is hung by a muka (tan) hand-braided wax natural fibre cord. The carving will transform over time with a new patina - manifesting the spirit of it’s owner.

Koru, the quintessential Māori pattern, represents growth, transformation, potential, and peace. Taken from the fern frond found throughout the forests of Aotearoa, koru represent the growth and transformation, the potential and peace found in the whenua (land). They are gifts of love and friendship.

This koru was carved by Jeremy Walsh from kawakawa pounamu sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 62mm in diameter, has a glossy finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.

The treasures and vital sustenance of Tangaroa, kaitiaki (protector) of the ocean, required our tūpuna (ancestors) to be expert mariners. The lines and curves of the matau (fishhook) not only represent abundance and prosperity but also safe passage across life's journeys, echoing the voyages undertaken by those who first explored and settled Te Moana-nui-a-Kiwa - the vast Pacific.

This hei matau was carved by Aaron Marshall from kōkopu pounamu sourced from Big Bay of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 75mm by 57mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.

From the discovery of Aotearoa by the original whale rider Paikea, tohorā (whales) have been highly regarded kin or tūpuna to Māori and are the kaitiaki (guardians) of the realm of Tangaroa, the atua (spirit) of the ocean. In the Māori world, they are an omen of the supernatural and a sign of abundance because of their many offerings, even in death.

This hiku tohorā was carved by Aaron Marshall from raukaraka pounamu sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 40mm by 80mm, has a semi-gloss finish, and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided polyester cord.

Ngā Riingi are contemporary ornaments drawn from the interconnection between Māori and diverse cultures from around the globe. The giving of rings is a promise to love cherish and protect one another for eternity.

This ring was handcrafted in our studio by John Mayo from kawakawa pounamu sourced from Marsden of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa and set in sterling silver.

Nguru are flutes carved in the natural shape of the whale tooth. They are commonly played by mouth or using the nostrils to produce haunting and melodious tones. They were traditionally played in times of sorrow and remembrance at tangihanga (funerals) or in solitude.

This nguru was hand-carved by Alex Sands from totara wood and engraved with unaunahi. It measures 127 x 40mm.

Kōuma are breastplates or shield adornments that represent strength and leadership, whilst evoking the physical. Evolving from personal body armour, they are a taonga of personal protection that share their beauty to te ao tūroa (the outer world). It is embellished with whakapapa notches, representing genealogy and connection to ones ancestors.

This kōuma was carved by Jeremy Walsh from kawakawa pounamu sourced from Arahura of Te Wai Pounamu, Aotearoa. It measures 90mm by 65mm, has a glossy finish, engraved with niho taniwha and is bound with an adjustable hand-braided cord.
