Choosing the Colour of the Passe-Partout

When selecting a passe-partout colour for framing a photograph, consider the picture’s tones, the desired optical effect, and the interior design of the space. Neutral shades such as white, ecru, or grey best highlight the image without distracting from it. Light hues make the photograph appear larger, while dark ones create a tunnel effect, drawing the viewer’s eye toward the centre.

Match the passe-partout to the dominant tones in your photograph – warm shades (e.g., beige, ecru) complement warm hues, while cool ones (e.g., grey) suit cool compositions. Black enhances colourful or red-yellow elements, whereas white pairs beautifully with black-and-white photography.

Auckland view from the Majestic Princess

The photograph was taken during the first voyage of the Majestic Princess in 2022. It was a special moment, as cruise ships were finally returning to their routes after the long break caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. For many people, this journey symbolised a return to normal life and the chance to travel again.

The photographer was on board during the voyage from Auckland to Sydney. The photo was taken just after departing from Princes Wharf, as the ship slowly moved away from the city. It is exactly this moment—when the land is left behind and the open ocean lies ahead—that feels truly special.

What draws the most attention in the image are the colours of the sky and the Auckland skyline reflected in the water. The warm tones of the sunset blend with the cooler shades of the approaching evening, creating a calm and beautiful atmosphere. In the background, the first city lights begin to appear, adding even more charm to the scene.

When Auckland Disappeared into the Fog - story

I took this photo at a moment when Auckland quite literally vanished under a thick layer of fog. It was so dense that in black and white it created something like a second plane — but one you can barely see. It’s as if something is there, and at the same time, it isn’t.

What surprised me most was that Mount Eden disappeared completely. It’s usually such a recognisable landmark, but that day there was no trace of it at all. Because of that, the whole scene felt a bit unreal, like the city had been cut off from the rest of the world and left hanging somewhere in empty space.

What is a fine art print?

More information about the artist who created the stunning sculpture Horizons:

Neil Dawson was born in Christchurch in 1948 and studied at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts in Christchurch and the Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne. His work focuses on large-scale, site-specific sculptures across New Zealand, Australia, Asia, and the United Kingdom. He is best known for his suspended sculptures, including Globe, which was exhibited in Magiciens de la Terre at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in 1989. His major commissions include the Bomber Command Memorial in Canberra, projects for Wellington’s Civic Square, Stadium Australia for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games, and Cathedral Square in Christchurch. In 2003, Dawson received a Laureate Award from the New Zealand Arts Foundation, and in 2004 he was appointed a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Prizes will be shipped within New Zealand, with delivery costs covered by the organiser.

Two Bridges – A photographer Story

While in Poland, I visited a place that feels somewhat forgotten — though not entirely. It remains an important landmark on the map of Poland, and even Europe. As I set out in that direction with a new project in mind, I did not really know what to expect. After researching the structure online, I had a rough vision of the image I wanted to create.

I knew this would not be just another photograph, but something more reflective and expressive. Something that does not suit every interior, but rather a fine art piece — created for an individual with a strong and distinctive sense of space and character in their home.
