Mahabir Pun Chocoly Inspirers
Hungry and Relentless
As we previously said, we will be honoring those who have inspired Nepal. We're a little late today, but we've got a familiar face for you.
Mr. Mahabir Pun, who has been touching lives to ensure that our country develops sustainably. His work has received widespread acclaim both nationally and internationally.
Born in a small village in the Myagdi District, he received his education in the United States. However, he returned to ensure that the area where he was born had the infrastructure to sustain education, which he accomplished through wireless distance learning initiatives. Pun's work on distance learning and online educational facilities is Nepal's first effort to use technology to solve the shortage of trained teachers. He took steps to ensure the progress and development of his projects by arranging for other teachers to attend a computer training course in Pokhara, launching economic projects to pay for students' expenses and teachers' salaries, and enlisting the help of hundreds of foreign volunteers with a variety of skills.
Mahabir Pun, a Magsaysay Award-winning Nepali activist, recognized that Nepal's health system would be unable to operate unless nurses, physicians, and technicians were provided with protective equipment when treating patients.
Pun decided that because imports were unlikely due to flight cancellations, his center would start producing PPEs.
He also brought 2,500 meters of fabric, but in the Kathmandu Valley, there was not a single tailor shop open.
So, on March 23, he put a request for tailors on his page. He has nearly 100,000 followers on Twitter, and news rapidly spread.
Pun soon began receiving phone calls from tailors and clothing stores all over the area. (Nepali Times)
He also went to great lengths to assist with the repair of ventilators so that hospitals would be well-equipped to deal with the pandemic.
His work is valued because he has accomplished so much with so little, and he continues to inspire others through his commitment and desire to better our community and country.
