Days later 🥺🥺🥺
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ember sat on the couch, her mind a thousand miles away. She had been lost in thought for hours, her eyes fixed on a blank wall as her brain wrestled with a thousand questions.
Valentine entered the room quietly, his eyes scanning the space until they landed on Ember. He walked over to her, his movements fluid and graceful, and sat down beside her.
"Hey, what's wrong?" he asked, his voice low and gentle. "You seem worried."
Ember sighed, her shoulders sagging under the weight of her concerns. "I need to go see my mom," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Valentine's expression turned serious. "No, Ember, you can't go."
Ember's eyes dimmed abit "I've been here for...I don't know, weeks? Days? My mom must be worried sick about me. I need to go and explain things to her, talk to her."
Valentine's grip on her arm tightened. "It's not safe, Ember. You know that. Your mom will just have to wait."
Ember pulled her arm free, her jaw setting in defiance. "No, Valentine. I have to go. I need to see her, talk to her. She's my mom."
Valentine's grabbed her arms and pulled her closer. "Listen to me, Ember. I know you want to see your mom, but it's not safe. They're still out there, waiting for you to make a move. I've seen them, lurking in the shadows, watching and waiting. If you go out there, you'll be putting yourself in danger."
Ember's face set in determination. "I don't care. I have to see my mom."
Valentine's eyes narrowed. "You're not listening to me, Ember. You're not thinking about the consequences."
Ember's mind began to race, thinking of ways to escape, to get out from under Valentine's watchful eye. "I think there's only one thing to do," she thought to herself. "If he won't let me go, I'll find a way to go anyway."
Valentine's eyes seemed to bore into her soul. "I can hear you, Ember," he said, his voice low and husky.
Ember's eyes widened in surprise, a shiver running down her spine. "You can hear me? What do you mean? You can hear my thoughts?"
Valentine's expression was unreadable. "I can hear your thoughts, Ember. And I know you're planning something. Don't try to sneak past me. It won't work."
Ember's heart raced, fear and surprise warring for dominance.
Her eyes were wide with shock and curiosity. "How long have you been hearing my thoughts?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Valentine's expression was calm, but his eyes seemed to hold a hint of something more. "From the first day I took you in my arms," he replied, his voice low and husky. "Until now."
Ember's mind reeled as she tried to process this information. "So, you've been listening to my thoughts all this time?" she asked, feeling a sense of vulnerability wash over her.
Valentine nodded. "Not always," he clarified. "Sometimes I choose not to hear them. I can shut them out if I want to. But sometimes...your thoughts are too loud, Ember. Especially when you're angry or emotional. Your emotions are like a beacon, calling out to me."
Ember's eyes narrowed. "So, you only hear my thoughts when I'm emotional?"
Valentine's gaze seemed to bore into her soul. "Not only then, but it's stronger when you are. Your emotions are like a key that unlocks the door to your mind. When you're feeling something strongly, it's harder for me to shut it out."
Ember took a deep breath, trying to wrap her head around this revelation. She felt exposed, vulnerable, but also curious.
But then he became serious again, his eyes burned with intensity as he grasped Ember's arms. "I told you, I'm not going to let what happened before happen again. From now on, you're going to stay with me. Wherever you go, I'll be there. Wherever I go, you'll be there. Don't try to act foolish with me, Ember," he begged.
Ember rolled her eyes. "You're the one acting foolishly. Isn't it time for you to do your savior job and take me home?" she asked, her voice laced with frustration.
She waited for him to respond, but he just stared at her, his eyes piercing. "Hello? I asked a question," she said, feeling uncomfortable under his gaze.
Valentine's expression didn't change, but his voice was laced with sadness and pain. "So, you want to go home? You want me to take you to the evil that awaits you? Is that what you're asking me to do?"
Ember knowing it's true but stood her ground. "Yes. I know all these things wouldn't happen if only I had stayed inside my house. So, if you take me back home, I promise I won't come outside, at least for the meantime, until I'm ready to let my mom go and we can figure out what's happening and why they're after me."
Valentine's eyes seemed to bore into her soul, as if searching for something. Ember felt a shiver run down her spine under his intense gaze.
His eyes seemed to plead with Ember as he spoke. "See, it's not like I'm really happy or I really want to have you here with all your shouting and dramatic behavior, but for your safety, I've given my ear a painful punishment. You can't go, okay? Please,"he said and look away."
But Ember, for the first time, called his name. "Valentine..." She thought it felt good saying his name, and she continued, "I know you've done all this for me, but I want to...I won't stay here forever, at least not for now. You have to let me go."
She stood up, her eyes locked on Valentine's, and started moving closer to him, her resistance faltering. Her initial plan was to grab the house keys, but as she approached him, she tripped on something and stumbled.
For what felt like minutes, they just stared at each other, the tension between them palpable. Then, Ember stood up, her eyes never leaving Valentine's, and said, "Sorry..."
But Valentine was already holding up the keys, out of her reach. "I'm not giving you these," he said, his voice firm.
Ember's eyes widened, and she took another step closer, her hands reaching out. "Valentine, please..." she said, her voice laced with a hint of desperation, as if she didn't know that he was incredibly fast and she can't easily grab the keys from him.
The argument had been escalating for what felt like hours, with neither Valentine nor Ember willing to back down. The air was thick with tension as they stood facing each other, the keys to the house dangling from Valentine's hand like a taunt.
"You're being unreasonable, Valentine!" Ember shouted, her face red with frustration. "I just want to go home, see my mom, and figure out what's going on. Why won't you let me?"
Valentine's jaw clenched, his eyes flashing with a mix of anger and sadness. "You know exactly why, Ember. It's not safe out there. Those werewolves will stop at nothing to get to you."
Ember threw up her hands. "I don't care! I'd rather take my chances than be stuck here with you and not figuring anything out,and be babysat like some kind of prisoner!"
Valentine's face twisted in pain, but he stood firm. "I'm doing this for your own good, Ember. You're not thinking clearly."
Ember's eyes narrowed, her voice dripping with venom. "And you are? You're just trying to control me, keep me locked up like some kind of trophy."
Valentine's hand closed around the keys, his knuckles white with tension. "I'm trying to protect you, Ember. But you won't listen."
The argument had been going in circles, with neither side willing to give in. Ember's eyes flashed with determination as she took a step closer to Valentine, her hand reaching out for the keys. But Valentine was ready for her, his fingers tightening around the keys as he pulled them out of her reach.
The standoff continued, the tension between them crackling like electricity.
Ember's eyes were fixed on Valentine's, her anger and frustration still simmering just below the surface. But then, something strange happened. Valentine's eyes flickered, and for a split second, they shone bright red. But before Ember could even process what she saw, Valentine flashed out of the room with super speed, leaving her stunned and confused.
"Valentine? Where did you go?" Ember called out, but there was no answer.
She waited for what felt like hours, but Valentine didn't return. It wasn't until evening, when the door banged open and Valentine strode back in, that Ember saw him again.
"Where did you go?" Ember demanded, still feeling a bit shaken by his sudden disappearance.
Valentine didn't answer. Instead, he simply said, "We're leaving first thing at dawn."
Ember's eyes narrowed. "So, what changed your mind? You were so adamant about me not leaving."
Valentine's expression was unreadable. "It doesn't matter. You want to go, right?"
Ember hesitated, unsure of what to make of Valentine's sudden change of heart. But a part of her was relieved. Little did she know, that things were about to take a dramatic turn.
Valentine lay on his bed, his eyes closed, his mind racing with thoughts of the upcoming departure. He had finally relented to Ember's demands, but a part of him still felt uneasy about it.
As he drifted off into a light sleep, he suddenly felt a presence around him. It was a whisper, soft and raspy, seeming to come from all around him.
"I know they're going to leave tomorrow," the whisper said, "but I don't know the exact time. Probably, the Valentine I know wants them to leave by night. So, we're going to wait for them at night."
Valentine's eyes snapped open, his heart racing. Who was speaking to him? And how did they know his plans?
He sat up, looking around the room, but there was no one there. The whisper seemed to come from within his own mind.
"Who are you?" Valentine demanded, his voice low and urgent. "What do you want?"
But there was no response. The whisper had stopped, leaving Valentine with more questions than answers.
He threw off the covers and got out of bed, his mind racing with possibilities.
Remember he hears people's thought and the possibility that the werewolves may have find out their plan for tomorrow got him standing on his feet.
Valentine burst into the room where Ember was sitting, his eyes blazing with urgency. "First thing tomorrow morning, before the first c**k crows, we're leaving," he announced, his voice low and intense.
Ember raised an eyebrow, taken aback by the sudden rush. "What's the sudden hurry? Can't I sleep in?" she asked, but Valentine's expression was unyielding.
"If you want to be alive to see your mother, then this is what we're going to do," he said.
And then, in an instant, he was gone, his body moving in a flash as he ran out of the house, leaving Ember wondering once again where he was off to.
Valentine ran and ran, his feet pounding the earth, until he reached a vast forest, where a bolt of lightning illuminated the darkness. A voice boomed from the heart of the lightning, speaking words that made Valentine's blood run cold.
"Valentine, Ember is a stubborn girl, but I want you to protect her from me," the voice said, its tone dripping with malevolence.
Valentine's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with questions. "Who are you? What do you want from us?" he demanded, but the voice just laughed, a sound that sent shivers down his spine.
"I am who made Ember someone you don't wish to know," the voice said. "Now, I want you to protect her. Something is going to happen tomorrow. I want you to be ready for it, because if you're not, both you and Ember will die."
