Signs Your Child Needs Extra Support (And It’s Okay)

Needing extra support does not mean a child is failing.
It simply means the child needs a different kind of help.

Here are common signs to watch for:

1️⃣ Learning feels stressful for the child

Frequent tears, avoidance, or fear during learning time.

2️⃣ Progress is very slow despite effort

The child is trying, but improvement is minimal over time.

3️⃣ Difficulty following simple instructions

Instructions need to be repeated many times.

4️⃣ Low confidence

The child gives up easily or says, “I can’t.”

5️⃣ Behaviour changes around learning time

Tantrums, withdrawal, or resistance during schoolwork.

What to do next:

Observe calmly.
Adjust expectations.
Seek guidance early.

Remember:

Early support protects confidence and builds success.

Follow Coach Shike for more intentional parenting and learning support.

✍️ Writing in the Early Years ; More Than Just Holding a Pencil

When you hear writing, what comes to mind?
Letters neatly arranged on lines? Words beautifully spelt? Sentences flowing?

But here’s the secret 👉 Writing for young children doesn’t begin with the pencil.

It starts from the way a child grips a spoon, the way they play with sand, the way they squeeze, tear, roll, and even scribble on walls. Each of these little actions is a silent rehearsal for the day they’ll confidently put their ideas on paper.

❓So, what if I told you that:

Scribbles are not “mess” but meaning in disguise.
Doodles are not “waste of time” but practice for story writing ✨

And even that messy play could be laying the foundation for a child’s fine motor control

As educators and parents, the earlier we understand this, the more we’ll celebrate the “little marks” as big milestones.

💡 Writing is not a moment; it’s a journey and the journey begins long before ABC.

What if I told you that your child is not slow?

I recently had a conversation with a parent who was interested in purchasing learning resources. I asked for the age of the child so I could recommend suitable materials. Her response was, “She’s slower than her age mates because I gave birth to her at seven months.”

But what if I told you your child is not slow?

They simply need a learning journey designed around their uniqueness.

Every child learns differently.
Build their curriculum based on their strengths, not on comparisons.

Design with purpose, not pressure.

Name It to Tame It: Building Emotional Intelligence at Ages 7–8

At this stage, children begin to form a deeper understanding of why they feel the way they do but they often lack the vocabulary or confidence to express those emotions clearly. Instead of helping them get over it, we must teach them to go through it—by identifying and naming their feelings.

Why it matters:
When a child can say “I’m frustrated because my friend didn’t include me” instead of just sulking or yelling, they’re learning self-awareness, empathy, and accountability skills they’ll carry into adulthood.

Try This at Home or in Class:

Use Feeling Charts: Visual aids with faces and words (happy, nervous, disappointed, embarrassed) help children make connections.

Model it: Say things like, “I feel a bit overwhelmed right now, so I’ll take a break and come back.”

Teach the “I feel...because...” sentence frame:
➤ “I feel sad because I couldn’t answer the question in class.”
➤ “I feel proud because I helped my friend.”

And Accountability?
Don’t rush to rescue them from mistakes. Instead, teach them to own it:

“What do you think you could have done differently?”

“How can you make it right?”

Remember: A fruitful learner is not one who never makes mistakes, but one who can learn from them emotionally, academically, and socially.

Ask your child or student today: “What was the best part of your day? What made you feel that way?”
Then pause. Let them think. That silence is where emotional growth begins.

Emotional Bonding & Speech Development for age 0-2years

Talk, Cuddle and Respond.
That’s learning too!

From the very first coo to the giggles and babbles your baby is learning to connect, trust, and speak. Emotional bonding and early speech don’t start in school they begin in your arms, during those everyday moments.

❤️ What to do?

Talk to your baby even if they can’t talk back

Cuddle often it builds security

Respond to their sounds they’re starting a conversation.

These simple actions build trust, stimulate the brain, and lay the groundwork for future communication.

Why Age-Specific Development Matters in Raising Children

Every stage of a child’s life comes with unique developmental tasks emotionally, socially, morally, and academically. When we understand what children need at each age, we can:

✅ Teach them better

A 3 year old doesn’t learn the same way a 7 year old does. Tailoring learning to their developmental level increases confidence and results.

✅ Correct them wisely

Discipline must match understanding. You can’t expect a toddler to have self control like a 10 year old. Age appropriate correction builds trust, not fear.

✅ Support their emotional growth

From tantrums at age 2 to peer pressure at age 9, children’s emotional struggles evolve. Knowing their stage helps you guide not just react.

✅ Build strong moral values

Moral training starts early. Simple “yes/no” lessons for toddlers grow into value-based reasoning for preteens. Each stage prepares the next.
Note :.When you meet a child at their level, you raise them to their potential.

Parenting and educating without understanding age specific needs is like pouring water on concrete it runs off. But when you nurture in season, you get a fruitful learner.
