A WORD ON WIPES.
Up to 40 percent of women in Nigeria, and North America have used wipes externally on the v***a. It is easy to see how they have become so accepted; they seem to be in every drugstore, some celebrities champion their use, and they are for babies, so they must be gentle and safe!
The widespread promotion of these products is based on the idea that normal female anatomy needs additional cleaning after using the bathroom compared with men. Why could women possibly need more a**l cleaning than men after a bowel movement? That’s misogyny. Wipes are useful to remove f***l material and urine from the ge***al skin as the chemicals, enzymes, and bacteria in f***s and urine, as well as the wetness, can damage the acid mantle, leading to irritation and skin breakdown.
That is why wipes are useful for babies who are incontinent and wear diapers, which are occlusive and keep the stool smushed against the skin. A washcloth and cleanser work just as well; however, the practicalities of using those outside your home and even in the home can be challenging. If you have f***l or urinary incontinence, then wipes may be handy outside the house and for occasional use at home when a washcloth is not an option. Another excellent option is a bidet. What’s the problem with wipes? They are a common cofactor in contact dermatitis in the v***a and a**l areas.
The v***a is fifteen times more likely to be irritated by these products than other areas. Instead of intimate wipes, they should be called irritant wipes. Looking at all the wipes on the market, there are over a hundred potential allergens to consider. The most common allergens in wipes include fragrance (“natural” or synthetic) and the following preservatives: methylisothiazolinone (MI), methylchloroisothiazolinone (MI), methylchloroisothiazolinone (MCI), propylene glycol (PG), bronopol (2-Bromo-2-nitropropane-1,3-diol), and iodopropynylbutylcarbamate.
A recent review of the potential allergens in wipes identified products with the fewest known allergens. Here are the ones on the list made by companies that do not also sell douches (I try not to send any business to companies that sell a product that we know harms women): Equate Baby Everyday Clean Wipes, Fragrance-Free Lady groomer Woman Wipes, Fresh Scent, Flushable Moist Wipes Designed for Womenpjur Med Clean Personal Soft Cleaning Fleece Pure Touch Individual Flushable Moist Feminine Wipes Swipes Lovin Wipes, Unscented Up & Up Extra Large Cleansing Washcloths You should not interpret this list as risk-free, irritation wise.
Ingredients change, and repeated exposure can lead to sensitization and allergic reaction. As manufacturers get rid of ingredients that cause irritation and allergic reactions, they may make substitutions that could potentially be equally as bad or even worse.
Every time I wipe I see stool, so I have to keep wiping; wipes help me clean those nooks and crannies effectively know this is a long header, but I hear this all the time. This is as good a place as any to review wiping. When you have a bowel movement, you may not completely empty your re**um, or even if you do, stool that is higher up simply moves down to the re**um. The re**um is a storage pouch that sits just above the a**l ca**l. Rubbing or stimulating the external a**l sphincter with aggressive wiping, for example, triggers a reflex that causes the sphincter to relax, and a small amount of stool will be released from the re**um.
You may see that on the toilet paper and mistakenly believe it was because you have not wiped enough. So you get more toilet paper or a wipe and dig around again and a little more stool comes out.
And again.
The more you swipe, the more you irritate the skin, all the while thinking you are irritated because there was a stool on your skin. The areas that are okay to wipe are outside on the perineum and around the a**s. Once you get directly on the external a**l sphincter (the opening), this is a no-wipe zone; blotting is preferred. The other option is a bidet.
BOTTOM LINE
> Overcleaning can be a source of irritation, as it can damage the skin’s acid mantle.
> Cleansers are preferred over soap.
> Give feminine washes a pass, as they are more likely to contain irritants and allergens and they have a destructive, patriarchal message.
> If you don’t have incontinence, save your money and your v***a and don’t buy wipes.
> Wiping aggressively over the a**s can paradoxically cause you to have more stool on the toilet paper.
Women's Health is very important to us men, but do they know that themselves?!
