The youngest baby in the UK to survive open heart surgery is 3 years old. little Fleur reunited with the surgeon who saved her life, Consultant Congenital Cardiac Surgeon, Dr Ikenna Omeje.

Fleur was born six weeks premature alongside her twin sister and weighed just 1.8kg at only 28 days old when doctors discovered she had a rare heart defect with less than a 20% chance of survival.

Dr Ikenna Omeje and his team at Leicester Royal Infirmary performed a complex nine-hour surgery, even modifying equipment because she was so tiny. After weeks on life support, Fleur survived and is now approaching her third birthday alongside her twin sister.

During the emotional reunion, Fleur’s mother told Dr Omeje: “You gave Fleur a life, and Ottilie has a sister because of you.”

Originally from Nsukka in Enugu State, Nigeria,
Dr. Ikenna Omeje completed his fundamental medical training at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). He moved to the UK in the 2000s to begin his advanced postgraduate surgical training. He spent over a decade undergoing rigorous cardiothoracic and paediatric surgical training across major UK health institutions, earning his Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) qualification.

THE OJA FLUTE

Written By Samuel Okon Dan ( For The Nigerian ) ✍🏼

The Oja flute is an indegineous flute made and blown by the indegineous people of the eastern region of Nigeria (Igbo Tribe), usually complimented with other local Nigerian instruments such as, the Ekwe, Udu, Igba, Gong and Shakers.

However, the unique whistle is an ancient means of communication, just like the "Talking drum" made and used by the indegineous people of the western region of Nigeria "Yorùbá Tribe" while drummers drum and dancers dance, to the ancient melidious tune during masquerade dances.

The oja flutist, popularly known as the "Oja Master" fronts the drumming and praise singing.

The Ojamaster possess the ability to produce several sounds directly analogous with spoken words. Dancers also sway to the tune of the oja flute, as if it were a drum or other rhythmic instrument. In most cases, if a distinguished personality enters the performance space, the oja flutist uses the reputable instrument to announce the name of such person.

Conclusively, the Oja flute can also be played at home without other instruments, or in the evening as a serenade accompaniment while taking a walk with a friend, life partner or family gathering.

Igbo amaka, Nigeria is blessed with a rich cultural heritage.
