*NŪR AL-HUDĀ INSTITUTE*

*FRIDAY SERIES #6.*

*The Ruling of Ghusl (Bath) on Friday*

*In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.*

Ghusl on the day of Jumu‘ah is one of the emphasized Sunnahs of Islam and among the important etiquettes connected to the Friday prayer. Islam encourages cleanliness, purity, and good appearance, especially when Muslims gather together for worship. The day of Jumu‘ah is the greatest day of the week, and preparing oneself physically and spiritually for it is from honoring the symbols of Allah سبحانه وتعالى.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ strongly encouraged ghusl for Jumu‘ah. He said: *“Ghusl on Friday is obligatory upon every adult.”* (Reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim). In another narration, he ﷺ encouraged the believers to bathe, apply perfume, and attend the Jumu‘ah prayer in a clean and pleasant state.

The scholars differed regarding the meaning of the word “obligatory” in this hadith. Some scholars, including a group from the people of knowledge, held that ghusl for Jumu‘ah is obligatory (wājib) upon every adult male attending the Friday prayer, especially if there is body odor or uncleanliness that may harm others. They relied upon the apparent wording of the hadith and the strong emphasis found in the Sunnah.

However, the majority of scholars held that ghusl for Jumu‘ah is a highly emphasized Sunnah (Sunnah mu’akkadah) and not an absolute obligation. They explained that the Prophet ﷺ strongly encouraged it because Muslims gather closely together, and cleanliness removes unpleasant smells and maintains respect for the congregation. According to this view, abandoning ghusl is disliked but not sinful unless a person harms others through neglect of cleanliness.

The stronger and safer position for a believer is to be consistent in performing ghusl every Friday, following the clear guidance and encouragement of the Prophet ﷺ. This was the practice of the righteous Salaf رحمهم الله, who honored Jumu‘ah
