Geographically, the traditional distribution of the DJEMBE drum is associated with the Mali Empire and includes parts of modern-day countries Guinea, Mali, Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Gambia, and Senegal. According to the Bambara people in Mali, DJEMBE / JEMBE translates to "everyone come together in peace" and defines the drum's purpose.
The Djembe is a handmade instrument carved from hardwood such as Mahogany or Tweneboa and covered with mostly goat or cow skin. The belief is that the Djembe drum contains three spirits of the tree from which it was made, the spirit of the animal skin, and the spirit of the carver.

Limba Collections is part of Modern Africa and Asia Collections. Dan Mask is inspired by the great tradition of African masks from the Dan people located in Liberia and Cote d'Ivoire.

This Dan mask is carved from wood called a sese tree. Dan masks are sacred objects. Dan masks are used for protection and as a channel for communication with the spirit world. Some dancers perform masked rituals on stilts.
