The Governor’s House now is in a very dilapidated state which had been built and designed in purely Doric style approximately two miles north of the scene of the pearl fishery by the first Governor of Ceylon, Honorable Frederick North (1798 – 1805), the 5th Earl Guildford. Rev James Cordiner A.M. , a late Chaplain of the Garrison of Colombo and author of ‘A description Of Ceylon’ had stated that “It is undoubtedly, the most beautiful building in the island and almost the only one which had been planned according to any order of architecture “. The exploitation of pearl fisheries in shores off Mannar which Ceylon enjoyed a pre-eminent reputation for producing the best pearls in the world continued during the Dutch and the British colonial rule. By 1924, a law regulating pearl fisheries was established, but it was too late: there were no more pearl oysters. Even today, heaps of oyster shells can be seen piled up underground in the immediate vicinity of this building. Ruins of this building are erroneously identified as the Palace of Queen Alliranai by the same local people and even in the Archaeological Department Publications. The bungalow is approximately a kilometre away from the Fort at Arippu and stands near the 22km Arippu Fort along the Mannar-Marichchukaddi road
