Cambodia and Malaysia Eye Halal Trade Growth at MIHAS

Cambodia and Malaysia are strengthening bilateral trade and investment cooperation, with both sides exploring new opportunities for businesses to expand into each other’s markets. Minister of Commerce Cham Nimul met with Malaysia’s MATRADE Chairman Dato’ Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican to discuss deeper economic collaboration.

A key focus was Cambodia’s participation in the Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS), a major international platform for halal products and services. The event could help Cambodian businesses promote their products, discover new markets and connect with international buyers and business partners.

The cooperation highlights Cambodia’s growing efforts to expand exports, develop the halal sector and build stronger international business networks. Closer Cambodia–Malaysia collaboration could create more opportunities for investment, market access and long-term commercial partnerships.

CDC Deputy Secretary-General Heang Sotheayuth chaired meetings with Foreign Trade Bank of Cambodia (FTB) and Wing Bank, which have completed integration with the cdcOSP system. Representatives from the Cambodian Investment Board, CDC departments and ACLEDA Bank also participated.

The new system aims to make public service payments faster, more convenient and more transparent for investors and businesses. The CDC said cooperation among government agencies and partner banks will support the successful rollout of digital fee collection and improve Cambodia’s investment environment.

Cambodia–ASEAN Trade Surges 20.7% in First 7 Months of 2026

Cambodia’s trade with ASEAN countries reached $11.68 billion in the first seven months of 2026, up 20.7% from $9.67 billion a year earlier. ASEAN trade accounted for 25.6% of Cambodia’s total $45.48 billion global trade, highlighting the region’s growing importance.

Cambodian exports to ASEAN increased slightly by 0.14% to $3.54 billion, while imports surged 32.6% to $8.14 billion. Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia were the kingdom’s top regional trading partners, with key exports including garments, footwear, solar panels, electronics, tyres, rice, cashews, rubber, cassava and fruits.

The growth reflects deeper regional economic integration, stronger supply chains and expanding cross-border investment. With the ASEAN Economic Community and RCEP supporting regional trade, Cambodia is expected to maintain strong trade growth as manufacturing networks and regional demand continue to expand.

Cambodia exported $1.05 billion worth of electrical equipment and electronic components in the first seven months of 2026, up 34% from $781 million during the same period last year. The strong performance highlights the country’s growing electronics and automotive manufacturing sectors.

The growth reflects Cambodia’s efforts to diversify beyond garments and footwear and attract higher-value investment. Other non-garment exports, including bicycles, vehicle tyres and processed wood, also recorded significant increases during the period.

The government is now pushing to transform Cambodia’s industrial base toward higher-skilled, technology-driven production. New economic plans aim to modernise manufacturing, strengthen automotive and electronics industries, create skilled jobs and improve Cambodia’s competitiveness in regional and global markets.

Australia is partnering with Olam Food Ingredients (OFI) to strengthen Cambodia’s domestic cashew processing industry. The initiative aims to expand processing capacity to 80 tonnes per day, attract up to $10 million in investment, create jobs and help Cambodia capture more value from its cashew sector.

Cambodia is the world’s second-largest producer of raw cashew nuts, but only a small share is processed domestically. In the first half of 2026, Cambodia exported around 1.03 million tonnes of raw cashews worth $1.75 billion, up 28.9% year-on-year. However, domestic processing has declined, highlighting the need for stronger investment, infrastructure and supportive policies.

The Australia-backed partnership could bring investment, technology transfer, job creation and greater value addition to Cambodia’s agricultural sector. With around 700,000 hectares of cashew plantations across 10 provinces, Cambodia is also moving forward with plans for a nearly 600-hectare cashew-processing industrial park in Kampong Thom, aiming to become a leading global cashew producer.

Cambodia–EU bilateral trade reached $3 billion in the first half of 2026, increasing 8.08% year-on-year. Cambodia exported $2.59 billion to the EU, mainly garments, footwear and travel goods, while imports from the EU rose 8.57% to $407 million.

The EU accounted for 7.8% of Cambodia’s total $38.2 billion trade during the first six months of 2026. Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium and France remained key destinations for Cambodian exports, highlighting the EU’s importance as a high-value market.

As Cambodia prepares to graduate from Least Developed Country (LDC) status and eventually lose EBA preferential access, the government is studying two options: an EU–Cambodia Free Trade Agreement (FTA) or GSP+. Cambodia–EU trade reached $5.87 billion in 2025, showing the importance of maintaining strong market access.
