Margaret Nduta Macharia, a 37-year-old woman from Murang’a County, Kenya, was arrested in July 2023 at Tân Sơn Nhất International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Authorities found over two kilograms of co***ne hidden in her luggage. She was traveling to Laos through Vietnam when immigration officers intercepted her.
She claimed that a Kenyan man named John had paid her $1,300 (approximately KSh 167,000) to transport the package and deliver it to another woman in Laos. John also covered her travel expenses, including tickets and accommodation. However, she insisted she did not know there were drugs in the package.
She had successfully traveled through Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Kenya, Bole International Airport in Ethiopia, and Hamad International Airport in Qatar before being caught in Vietnam.

Her mother, Purity Wangui, who lives in Weithaga village in Murang’a County, expressed deep sorrow over the ruling. She called on Kenyan authorities, including President William Ruto and area MP Ndindi Nyoro, to intervene and bring her daughter home to serve a prison sentence instead. However, Kenya and Vietnam do not have a prisoner exchange agreement, making such a possibility unlikely.
This case serves as a wake-up call to young people considering getting involved in drug trafficking. While the temptation of quick money is high, the risks are even greater, including long-term imprisonment or ex*****on. It is crucial for individuals to be aware of the dangers and legal consequences of engaging in illegal activities.
Despite claiming ignorance about the drugs in her luggage, the law holds travelers responsible for what they carry. Now, she faces the consequences of her decisions, and her story
