Step 1: Preparing Sisal Fibre for Basket Weaving
- Harvesting
- The weavers select and cut the inner leaves of the sisal plant.
- These leaves are chosen because they provide the strongest and most flexible fibres.
- Stripping the fibre
- The leaf is pulled between two sticks or scraped with a machete.
- This removes the green, juicy pulp and leaves behind the white fibres.
- The process is entirely manual, requiring skill and patience.
- Drying
- Once stripped, the fibres are spread out in the sun.
- Drying ensures the fibres become firm, light, and ready for twisting or dyeing before weaving.
This step transforms raw sisal leaves into usable fibre, laying the foundation for strong, durable, and beautiful baskets.
