POJ Studio Discover the beauty of Japanese craftsmanship by learning about it’s history and modern use POJ Studio addresses this issue by:

1. and further.

Japan has one of the most beautiful arts & crafts in the world, but the craftspeople behind it live in a time where it is extremely difficult to find successors. The tragedy in this is that a lot of the arts & crafts are dying out because of that. Raising awareness and finding out if there's interest outside of Japan for these products

2. If there is enough interest, to bring those products to th

e people interested

3. Building an ecosystem that supports the craftsmen to find ways of keeping the tradition alive

This is my first step in raising awareness and finding out if there is an interest for these arts & crafts in the world to see if I can/should move on to 3. I see where this leads and if you can help me make this happen :)

Makers, educators, custodians. The Yanase family have been handcrafting chōchin lanterns for six generations.

A once flourishing trade in Japan, households and businesses all relied on the work of lantern makers to light up their spaces.

However, as the dawn of electricity decreased the importance of lanterns in daily life, chōchin craftspeople shifted focus to creative objects of decoration rather than necessity.

Today, the Yanase family is working to train young craftspeople to inherit the traditional washi and lantern making techniques.

Together, they are extending the life of this treasured craft practice, creating lanterns for festivals, temples, and modern homes.

Every July the Minato Maizuru Chatta Fireworks Festival lights up the sky across Kyoto prefecture.

Held in the coastal city of Maizuru, the annual festivities offer an opportunity to enjoy traditional food, games, and ceremonies.

The crowning jewel of this festival, however, remains the grand display of seaside fireworks.

With around 4000 fireworks launched from a ship in the Maizuru bay, this festival-closing event is always a dazzling spectacle to behold.

Delight in the whimsy and joy of motif.’s playful ceramic designs.

Adopting a mischievous spin on the classic blue and white porcelain, the motif. collection depicts the renegade exploits of a traditional figure as they surf, wrestle, and even fly through space.

Junko Shindo, the creative mind behind motif., relishes the thought that an archeologist may one day unearth these temporally-anachronistic pieces, to great confusion.

Available for a limited time only, explore our seasonal artist exhibit online now.

Every July, the city of Kyoto is taken over by Japan’s most famous festival.

Occurring across the month, the Gion Matsuri crescendos with a procession of traditional parade floats on the 17th.

Up to 25 meters tall, weighing up to 12 tons, and decorated with traditional textiles, the Yamaboko (floats) are a truly impressive sight not to be missed.

Soak up the festival atmosphere across the city by donning traditional yukata, partaking in traditional snacks, and catching the extravagant parades.
