Doracor - Unexpected Intersections CD

A quasi dieci anni di distanza dal precedente album “Passioni postmoderne di un musicista errante” pubblicato su AMS Records (AMS 274 CD) nel 2016, il tastierista e compositore Corrado Sardella torna con un nuovo album firmato Doracor, un progetto che nasce diverso tempo fa da una collaborazione con Red Canzian – già ospite in “Passioni postmoderne…” – per un brano sanremese che rimase incompiuto ma che allo stesso tempo fu prima scintilla d’ispirazione per questo nuovo lavoro.

Nel 2024, infine, l’incontro con la cantante e compositrice Lorena Cossu ha fornito ulteriori spunti creativi che hanno dato a “Unexpected Intersections” una linea ben definita, culminata con la realizzazione della suite che ha dato il nome all’intero album: il brano descrive una metafora esistenziale che esorta a non dimenticare mai la nostra zona ludica, cosicché il nostro bambino interiore possa riunirsi alla parte adulta.

Dal punto di vista sonoro, l’intero disco poggia le basi sulle tastiere di Corrado; in quasi 75 minuti di musica si alternano momenti intensi e di pathos, con numerosi e lunghi assoli di chitarra elettrica e sassofono, ad altri pacati e introspettivi, a cavallo tra sonorità neo-progressive e fusion. Tra i numerosi eccellenti musicisti ospiti, che hanno conferito al progetto dinamismo ed entusiasmo, troviamo John Jowitt (bassista di IQ e Arena), Mirko De Maio (batterista di The Flower Kings), Simona Malandrino (chitarrista di Ian Paice, Andrea Braido e Marcella Bella), Elisa Montaldo (cantante/tastierista de Il Tempio delle Clessidre) e Kostas Milonas (batterista di Sunburst e Paradox).

Almost ten years after “Passioni postmoderne di un musicista errante” (Post-modern passions of a wandering musician) released on AMS Records (AMS 274 CD) in 2016, keyboardist and composer Corrado Sardella returns with a new album under the Doracor signature, a project conceived a long time ago starting with a collaboration with Red Canzian – already a guest on “Passioni postmoderne…” – for a Sanremo Festival song that remained unfinished, yet became the first spark of inspiration for this new work.

Eventually, in 2024, the meeting with the singer and composer Lorena Cossu provided further creative input that gave ‘Unexpected Intersections’ a well-defined direction, resulting in the making of the suite that gave the entire album its name: the song describes an existential metaphor that urges us never to forget our playtime zone, so that our inner child can be reunited with the adult part.

From a sonic perspective, the whole album revolves around Corrado’s keyboards; in almost 75 minutes of music, intense and emotional moments, delivering various long electric guitar and saxophone solos, with others more mellow and introspective, ranging between neo-progressive and fusion. Among the many excellent guest musicians, who have brought dynamism and enthusiasm to the project, we have John Jowitt (bassist from IQ and Arena), Mirko De Maio (drummer from The Flower Kings), Simona Malandrino (guitarist with Ian Paice, Andrea Braido and Marcella Bella), Elisa Montaldo (singer/keyboardist from Il Tempio delle Clessidre) and Kostas Milonas (drummer of Sunburst and Paradox).

Da oltre dieci anni Ellesmere è il progetto musicale del multistrumentista e compositore Roberto Vitelli, musicista da sempre legato ad AMS Records e che con questo secondo album dal vivo, registrato in occasione dell’edizione 2024 del prestigioso festival Prog & Frogs, rinnova il sodalizio con l’etichetta milanese.

Fatta eccezione per il primo album “Les Châteaux de la Loire”, dalle coordinate folk e acustiche, sin dal secondo disco “From Sea and Beyond” il progetto Ellesmere ha profondamente mutato forma stilistica, verso un prog-rock sinfonico e moderno, spesso confinante con l’hard rock, un cambiamento possibile anche grazie a numerosi ospiti di fama internazionale coinvolti da Roberto. In “Mere, On Stage!” troviamo quindi, al fianco di Roberto, John Wilkinson (voce), David Jackson (sassofono) e Maurizio Guarini (tastiere), oltre a Giacomo Anselmi (chitarra), Fabio Bonuglia (tastiere) e Diego Bertocci). Inevitabilmente, nella dimensione ‘live’, l’impatto dei brani è ancor più energico, specialmente nella seconda metà dello show dove le composizioni più lunghe e complesse si rivelano sempre coinvolgenti e trascinanti.

A completare questa release Roberto Vitelli ha inoltre deciso di aggiungere un ulteriore brano registrato in studio, “Broken Barricades” dei Procol Harum, la prima cover version di sempre di Ellesmere.

For more than ten years, Ellesmere has been the music project of multi-instrumentalist and composer Roberto Vitelli, a musician who has always been connected to AMS Records and who, with this second live album, recorded on the occasion of the 2024 edition of the prestigious Prog & Frogs festival, reinforces his partnership with the Milanese label.

With the exception of the first album ‘Les Châteaux de la Loire’, with its folk and acoustic roots, since the second album ‘From Sea and Beyond’ the Ellesmere project has profoundly changed its style, towards a symphonic and modern prog-rock, often bordering on hard rock, a change that was also made possible by the numerous world-famous guests involved by Roberto. In “Mere, On Stage!” we therefore find, alongside Roberto, John Wilkinson (vocals), David Jackson (saxophone) and Maurizio Guarini (keyboards), as well as Giacomo Anselmi (guitar), Fabio Bonuglia (keyboards) and Diego Bertocci). The impact of the songs is necessarily even more powerful in the ‘live’ setting, especially in the second half of the show, where the longer and more complex compositions always prove to be captivating and enthralling.

To complete this release, Roberto Vitelli also decided to include an additional studio-recorded track, Procol Harum’s “Broken Barricades”, the first ever cover version produced by Ellesmere.

Zio Crocifisso - Campana di Legno + Trappola per Topi (CD digipack)

Zio Crocifisso è un progetto musicale nato nel 2021 dall’incontro tra Dario Magri (Yokoano, Sho), Paolo “SKE” Botta (Yūgen, SKE, Not a Good Sign) e Matteo Serenelli (The Appetizers), trio dalle molteplici sonorità che ha trovato terreno fertile in ambito avant-prog strumentale, con influenze che spaziano tra King Crimson, Tool, Melvins, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Zu e Poil.

Il gruppo esordisce nel 2024 con l’EP digitale “Campana di Legno” e, dopo aver arruolato il bassista Fabio Malizia (Orbe), grazie a una proposta trasversale, sinistra e musicalmente dinamica, suona dal vivo in contesti sia tipicamente rock che legati al cinema e all’animazione. Nel 2025 nuovo materiale inedito viene infine registrato e, unito ai brani del precedente EP, contribuisce alla realizzazione finale di “Campana di Legno + Trappola per Topi”: la varietà stilistica subisce un ulteriore incremento, in un disco che passa agilmente da momenti eterei e onirici al math-rock e all’heavy-prog; i nuovi brani vedono inoltre la partecipazione di cantanti e musicisti che aggiungono a un piatto già ricco momenti più sperimentali e ambient, oltre a parti vocali con testi ispirati al romanzo “I Malavoglia” di Giovanni V***a.

E proprio a quel libro gli Zio Crocifisso devono il loro nome, grazie a un personaggio legato alla nota espressione “non c’è peggior sordo di chi non vuol sentire”; questo, insieme alla corrente letteraria – il Verismo – a cui appartiene il romanzo di V***a, costituiscono le ‘fondamenta concettuali’ alla base di questo progetto, che col proprio eclettismo stilistico tenta di fotografare la caotica contemporaneità che ci circonda.

Zio Crocifisso is a musical project founded 2021 by Dario Magri (Yokoano, Sho), Paolo “SKE” Botta (Yūgen, SKE, Not a Good Sign) and Matteo Serenelli (The Appetizers), a trio with a multifaceted sound that has found fertile ground in the instrumental avant-prog realm, with influences ranging from King Crimson, Tool, Melvins, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Zu and Poil.

The band made their debut in 2024 with the digital EP “Campana di Legno” and, after enrolling bassist Fabio Malizia (Orbe), thanks to a cross-genre, sinister and musically dynamic proposal, played live in both typical rock and cinema/animation contexts. In 2025 new material was ultimately recorded and, combined with the tracks of the previous EP, contributed to the final realization of “Campana di Legno + Trappola per Topi”: the stylistic variety was then further increased, in a record that easily shifts from ethereal and dreamlike moments to math-rock and heavy-prog; in the new tracks were also involved guest singers and musicians who added more experimental and ambient moments to an already rich programme, as well as vocal parts with lyrics inspired by Giovanni V***a’s novel “I Malavoglia”.

And it is precisely to that same book that the Zio Crocifisso owe their name, thanks to a character linked to the well-known expression “there is none so deaf as he who will not hear”; this, in addition to the literary current – the so-called Verismo – which V***a’s novel belongs to, constitute the ‘conceptual foundations’ behind a project that, with its stylistic eclecticism, attempts to photograph the chaotic contemporaneity that surrounds us.

Diego Petrini - La Materia del Suono (CD papersleeve)

Diego Petrini è un eccellente batterista e tastierista, tra i fondatori e tra i principali compositori de Il Bacio della Medusa, gruppo imprescindibile di rock progressivo italiano degli anni duemila. In questo “La Materia del Suono”, suo esordio solista, il polistrumentista perugino lascia che la propria creatività letteralmente esploda e si riversi in una commistione di generi musicali che non è altro che la vera essenza del progressive rock.

Siamo di fronte a un concept album cinematico, frutto di un processo compositivo iniziato anni fa al pianoforte, strumento musicale che infatti domina la scena dalla prima all’ultima nota su una base ritmico-melodica principalmente jazz-rock e fusion. Innumerevoli sono le contaminazioni disseminate in ogni brano: musica classica, lirica, etnica, popolare, folk, rock, con numerosi interventi di Moog e Mellotron che omaggiano il prog scandinavo, mentre flauto e sassofono – suonati da Eva Morelli del Bacio della Medusa – rievocano più volte il jazz-rock e il progressive anni ’70.

L’album è interamente strumentale, fatta eccezione per la conclusiva “Ciò che trascende”, in cui il canto affidato all’inconfondibile Alvaro Fella dei leggendari Jumbo invita esplicitamente l’ascoltatore ad essere sé stesso e a porsi costantemente domande esistenziali e filosofiche in un mondo sempre più materialista e freddo. Con “La Materia del Suono” Diego Petrini riesce infine a far suonare i pochi musicisti ospiti come un’orchestra, e si riconferma talento musicale più unico che raro!

Diego Petrini is an excellent drummer and keyboard player, among the founders and main composers of Il Bacio della Medusa, an essential Italian progressive rock band of the 2000s. With “La Materia del Suono” (The Matter of Sound), his first solo record, the multi-instrumentalist from Perugia allows his creativity to literally explode and flood into a mixture of music genres that is no other than the true spirit of progressive rock.

We are dealing with a cinematic concept album, the result of a compositional process that began years ago on the piano, an instrument that in fact dominates the stage from the first to the last note over a mainly jazz-rock and fusion rhythmic-melodic core. Countless contaminations are to be found throughout each track: classical, lyrical, ethnic, folk, and rock music, with several Moog and Mellotron performances that pay tribute to the Scandinavian prog, while flute and saxophone – played by Eva Morelli from Il Bacio della Medusa – frequently evoke jazz-rock and 1970s progressive music.

The album is fully instrumental, with the exception of the closing “Ciò che trascende” (What Transcends) whose lyrics are sung by the legendary Jumbo’s unmistakable vocalist Alvaro Fella, and explicitly invite the listeners to be always themselves and to constantly ask existential and philosophical questions in an increasingly materialistic and cold world. With “La Materia del Suono” Diego Petrini eventually manages to make his few guest musicians sound like an orchestra, and proves himself to be a quite unique musical talent!

Pippo Caruso - Maladoloscenza OST LP

“Maladolescenza” è un film del 1977 scritto e diretto da Pier Giuseppe Murgia, un’opera inevitabilmente controversa poiché si tratta di una pellicola drammatica le cui principali attrici erano all’epoca delle riprese ancora minorenni.

La colonna sonora di “Maladolescenza” è una vera ‘gemma nascosta’ del catalogo Cinevox Record, costituita da diversi affreschi di musica classica dalle tinte romantiche e bucoliche, accostabili al pop sinfonico italiano degli anni ’70 nei brani in cui gli arrangiamenti orchestrali sono accompagnati da basso e batteria. Vera e propria ciliegina sulla torta è la presenza ne “L’incubo e il serpente” dei non accreditati Goblin (che all’epoca lavorarono insieme a Pippo Caruso per le musiche del programma televisivo RAI “Chi?”), per un brano carico di tensione e groove che non avrebbe sfigurato nella colonna sonora di “Zombi / Dawn of the Dead”.

Questo LP, nella sua versione originale, è tra i più rari mai pubblicati da Cinevox, ed è finalmente ristampato in un’edizione speciale con un nuovo artwork e un inserto corredato di immagini e testi curati da Fabio Capuzzo che descrivono dettagliatamente il film e la sua colonna sonora.

“La Moglie Più Bella” è un film drammatico del 1970 diretto da Damiano Damiani, in cui esordì all’epoca una giovanissima Ornella Muti; la colonna sonora composta da Ennio Morricone e diretta da Bruno Nicolai rimase inedita fino agli anni ‘90, fatta eccezione per due brani (la title-track e “Tema di Francesca”) che furono pubblicati su 45 giri. Questa è quindi la prima edizione di sempre di questa colonna sonora in vinile!
Ennio Morricone alla composizione, Bruno Nicolai in veste di direttore d’orchestra ed Edda Dell’Orso alla voce sono anche in questo caso garanzia di un risultato a dir poco eccezionale: “La Moglie Più Bella” è senza dubbio tra le ‘gemme nascoste’ più preziose forgiate da Morricone, grazie a delle partiture che uniscono musica classica e popolare, come già il Maestro aveva fatto ad esempio ne “Il Clan Dei Siciliani”, adornate di atmosfere drammatiche, misteriose e plumbee; l’uso di percussioni incalzanti in alcuni brani conferisce inoltre sensazioni di tragicità e ineluttabilità, perfette per un film come questo.

“La Moglie Più Bella” (The Most Beautiful Wife) is a 1970 dramatic film directed by Damiano Damiani, in which a very young Ornella Muti made her debut. The soundtrack, composed by Ennio Morricone and conducted by Bruno Nicolai, remained unreleased until the 90s, with the exception of two songs (the title-track and “Tema di Francesca”) that were released on a 45rpm single. This is therefore the first ever vinyl release of this soundtrack!
Ennio Morricone as composer, Bruno Nicolai as conductor and Edda Dell’Orso as vocalist guarantee a result that is nothing short of exceptional: “La Moglie Più Bella” is undoubtedly one of Morricone’s most precious ‘hidden gem’, thanks to scores that combine classical and popular music, as the Maestro had already showed in “Il Clan

AN ESSENTIAL ITALIAN PROGRESSIVE ROCK BAND COMEBACK!

Initially active during the late 80s / early 90s, in that first phase of their career Nuova Era released four albums that are still considered essential for progressive rock fans from Italy… and beyond! After their comeback, several years later, with an English-sung album (“Return to the Castle”, 2016, AMS187CD), Nuova Era have further ‘sharpened their blades’ for what is perhaps their most ambitious album ever, now again with lyrics written in their mother tongue.

“20.000 Leghe sotto i Mari” (Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas), in fact, openly inspired by Jules Verne’s literary masterpiece, consists of a single suite of almost 40 minutes in length – divided into two acts in the LP version – that constitutes a sort of summary of everything that Italian progressive rock has always represented: a musical genre often used to describe the complexity and variety of the human soul, thanks to continuous and unpredictable harmonic, rhythmic and melodic changes, all intimately linked by a single thread. Apart from some electric guitar and keyboard sections that clearly sound modern and fresh, “20.000 Leghe sotto i Mari” could well be mistaken for one of the great symphonic prog albums released in the early 70s!

“La Signora Gioca Bene a Scopa?” è una commedia erotica del 1974 diretta da Giuliano Carnimeo, con protagonisti Edwige Fenech e Carlo Giuffré. All’epoca di questa colonna sonora non fu pubblicato nulla, neppure un 45 giri; solo nel 2010 fu pubblicata integralmente in formato CD.

Per la prima volta in assoluto quindi la colonna sonora di questo film vede la luce su vinile, grazie a un lavoro effettuato sui master stereo della sessione originale. Alessandroni ha composto un allegro tema principale fox-trot per orchestra e voce femminile sexy, come di consueto affidata alla mitica Edda Dell’Orso (A1, B8), ripreso in eleganti versioni orchestrali (A2), come bossa (A4), romantico per archi (A5), tango (A6), con il celebre fischio di Alessandroni (A9, B2), con flauti (B4) e con la chitarra elettrica (B7). Questo brillante motivo viene alternato a musica di sapore mistico religioso per archi (A7), a un’elegante bossa pop (A8, A10, B1, B6) e a musica drammatica funebre (B5).
