President Donald Trump flew to Beijing with big hopes... trade deals, rare earth agreements, major wins. He came back with almost nothing. But that's not even the wildest part of this story.
Every single gift Chinese officials handed to the US delegation was thrown into a trash bin right at the bottom of Air Force One's stairs. Phones, pins, badges, souvenirs, all of it dumped. Not one item of Chinese origin was allowed on the plane. A White House correspondent witnessed it herself and confirmed it publicly.
This isn't paranoia. It's protocol. China is known for hiding surveillance devices inside diplomatic gifts. In 2023, a listening device was allegedly found inside a teapot gifted to a British embassy staffer in Beijing. So the US takes absolutely zero chances.
The precautions went even further. Personal phones were left behind in America before the trip even started. The phones kept on Air Force One were stored in Faraday bags that block every signal... GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, everything. President Trump, Elon Musk, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and the entire delegation used only burner phones and burner email addresses throughout the visit.
Behind the friendly smiles between Trump and Xi, things were chaotic. A Secret Service agent was blocked entry at the Temple of Heaven for carrying a firearm. A White House aide was trampled by Chinese reporters. Heated clashes broke out between US agents and Chinese officials. One US official called it a complete mess.
